A19

Snow gone. Road still knackered.

Heavy going around Elwick turnoff. Looks like trouble up ahead at Wolviston.

Happy Monday
Fortunately, I passed there at 4:30 this morning when all was quiet but it has become a bit of a bottleneck of late in more conventional hours. I did notice however, there's a lot more standing water than usual, especially from Castle Eden to Norton because of the thawing of snow so don't take your eye off the ball yet guys n girls.

No ice, and not especially wet - but VERY busy from Peterlee to Silverlink this morning. Took an hour after setting off at 8.30

Back to normal southbound this morning. Lots of traffic and very busy towards Wolviston
My mate works for the highways agency and told me there are major roadworks planned for that stretch of the A19 this year. They are removing the noisy concrete
road surface and making it a 3 lane system to hopefully reduce congestion at peak periods. Most of the work will be done overnight but some daytime restrictions are
expected.

Hope to fk they're going to leave one lane open cos it'll be some detour if they don't. Slightly off topic but on the subject of that stretch of the A19. Has anyone else seen that pair of buzzards that fly above the A19 next to the "clipper" factory unit? I've seen them a canny few times.

Thing about that concrete road - Yes, its noisy, but its never needed resurfacing. I can live with the noise if its just as safe to drive on and cheaper to maintain.

Been loads of complaints about constant road noise from residents of houses in Wynyard , Wolviston and a posh area of Billingham (?) for years.

Even with tarmac you are going to have road noise given the volume of traffic. The road was there before the houses in most cases, so they actively chose to live next door to it. If you don’t bother to open a window and listen for noise then why should we be forced to spend millions resurfacing a road that is perfectly functional. Think of the tax payers!

There is more too it than that. The concrete surface is coming to the end of its design life, doesn't drain well in wet weather and is prone to icing in extremely cold weather.

Didn't want to create new threads, so bumping this.

I guess the ground works on the south side of Testos roundabound will be the compound for the new flyover? Anyone know when that work is due to start and how much of a fucker its going to be, and for how long?

Also, someone mentioned something to me a while back that still makes no sense - He mentioned there may be a third tunnel going into the tyne tunnel - nonsense, yes?

it was sounded out a few years ago definitely, as the then owner of Owen Pughs told me he was at some sort of brainstorming / feasibility study with loads of experts sounding out if/when/how/where it would work.

not sure if anything ever came of it, that was about 4 years ago

the testo's thing might be the compound but it seems very early, as silverlink still has at least a year left. it may well be some service rerouting, as i saw the rig for the directional drillers in operation, and the drilled from the south east corner to the north west corner directly under the roundabout. it must be linked in some way but i don't think its the compound

A Highways England road project | A19 Testos junction improvement

There's also some lane closures at the A1231 (N & S) & A1290 (N) junctions which start tonight iirc. The diversion signs have been up since the weekend through Washington.
