Top of the Pops 1982 on BBC4 now

Great era for music.............where are today's Weller, Strummer, Smith, Difford&Tilbrook.......I could go on.

Feel sorry for the kids of today....i know its cliched but music today is utter turd.

Spot on.

Listen to a song like ‘Serpentine Fire’ by Earth Wind and Fire.

There’s guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, percussion, brass, strings, harmonies. There’s and intro, bridge, verse, chorus, breakdown, middle eight, outro etc.

Now you switch on the drum machine. Switch on the sequencer. Lock in an eight note loop. Blather some inane lyrics through auto tune so you sound like Steven Hawking, repeat for four minutes and fade out. Bingo, you’re done.

Nowt can compete with 66-70 like. Have a look at any week's top 20 chart and there will be at least 5 classics in there.

Wonder if we will say the same about today's music in 50 years?

You've called this about right old son - there was decent stuff in 77-78 and 83-84 but 79-82 were amazing years - 79 especially - even the stuff that seemed decidedly average at the time sounds amazing now, people like Costello, Dury, Lowe, Edmunds, Blondie, XTC , Police, Joe Jackson, The Skids in the charts and the Indy stuff bubbling under - it was an amazing period - 75% of the chart stuff was decent - by 81-82 all of the indy stuff from 79 was mainstream and TOTP was a real experience - it started going downhill from 83 and apart from Madchester and Britpop there's been sweet FA since
