Top of the Pops 1982 on BBC4 now

Remember buying records back then was a whole experience in itself, the first time you took it out of the sleeve, dropped it on the deck and lifted the stylus into the groove. Poring over the artwork for hours on end, reading every minutiae of detail on the cover, and if you were lucky even having the lyrics to the songs so you weren't a victim of misheard lyrics
Aye spot on (you owld bastard!) - it was a whole visceral experience back then. Kids these days, they don’t know they’re born. Downloading computer files and never actually owning anything material.

I’m slowly converting my cassette collection into MP3s as I’m concerned that either the cassettes will deteriorate (after thirty years!) or else not be able to get a cassette player if and when this one dies. I had over two hundred albums on cassette, recorded during my time at school and college in the eighties when I couldn’t afford to buy many LPs (or god forbid CDs - got my first CD player in 1988!).
Also @tunstall birdman the art of wooing a bewer by composing the perfect mix tape has gone the way of the dodo and the eight track these days anarl.

And of course that's why vinyl records are so popular now plus you get a git big fuckoff cover picture to look at

Stranglers, Bow Wow Wow, The Jam, Depeche Mode, Haircut 100 and Bananarama all on the same show. Was there ever a better era for British music than 1979-82?

I had a bit of a crush on Anabella Lwin back then. Turns out she’s the same age as me.

The mix of stuff puts those years near the top, great bands came before Punk etc but it was a bit samey and lacked a bit of umf!
Some absolute rubbish on some weeks with 1 decent band if you were lucky.Even the pop stuff was played by decent musicians etc.It could happen again but the charts seem to move stupidly slow which can't be good for anyone so not sure who's controlling it or why

Fantastic period for pop music and especially stuff that got in the charts. You’d get some weird, wonderful, well-crafted and occasionally political tracks in the top 75 in those days. My youngest changes the car radio over to Capital at the moment and my word it’s f***ing diabolical.

A lyric sheet was vital.

I've got nothing against Spotify and mp3's and shit, its great for having on in the background when you're pottering about in the house. I put it through my circa 1989 amp via a Google chromecast audio and it's class. However you cant beat chilling out with a few Dame Edna's and firing up the turntable. It's a completely different experience listening to lp's in order and in glorious analogue.

Aye. Maiden, Priest and Lizzy becoming chart regulars at that time

He was defending the abominable Celine Dion the other day man so I’d call this a modicum of progress.
Sozz like Cluffy, there’s absolutely nee coming back from that man.
 I like going out on a limb and having a bit wind up.
On the other hand she's sold 220 million units so is it even going out on a limb?
I like energy in music and she has it in her voice.
I'm just broad-minded tbh. ;)
