Top of the Pops 1982 on BBC4 now

We all used to complain like shit every week about TOTP and how crap it was - if you were lucky there might be one or two bands on that you really liked or looked forward to seeing.

Looking back we had no idea how lucky we were to be in the middle of such an eclectic and creative period. Of course even with rose tinted geggs a lot of it was still out and out crap (Hayzee Fantayzee, Joe Dolce, others too numerous to mention) but what a time to be alive!

I was on another board recently, posting about how you’d hear a rumour that the next Jam single was going to be released soon, and if you listened to Peter Powell’s five 45s at 5.45 you might get lucky and catch the very first playing of it on radio one and get to tell everyone at school about it the next day.

Shiny Shiny was f***ing class.

1966-1970

A good shout. Add that to the years I mentioned and we are in business. Any idiots who come on here and claim any different are obviously canny mad.

Back when music on tv was class and something everyone ran home to watch. Thursday night there'd be nobody out playing any games in the street and all would be sat infront of the box waiting to see what was no.1. Bit like Saturday morning tv with the childrens shows and then all the music shows on after (then wrestling/World of Sport etc..).

Catch a few ToTP's late on at night before going to kip and I end up lying there till all hours watching chod that is fantastically good whilst I reminisce of being young again and watching it the first time around.

Those were great days for listening to music on vinyl records with not even cassettes, AM radio , no internet Youtube MTV or smartphones.
Remember buying records back then was a whole experience in itself, the first time you took it out of the sleeve, dropped it on the deck and lifted the stylus into the groove. Poring over the artwork for hours on end, reading every minutiae of detail on the cover, and if you were lucky even having the lyrics to the songs so you weren't a victim of misheard lyrics
