The Iliad is towards the end of the war and Odyssey is after it. There are references to earlier events like Paris having taken Helen but not in any detail iirc.

It is true that the Iliad is predominantly based within the last few weeks of the war it relates all the relevant information on how we have arrived at that point with analepsis. So we know about the sowing of salt, the beauty contest etc
