The Super spoilery Star Wars : The Last Jedi spoilers thread *don't even put your mouse over it*

What a bunch of absolute winnits man. Aye, lasses ruin sci fi, hence Alien, Firefly, X Files, Terminator, Battlestar Galactica remake, Blake’s 7, The Matrix, etc

I think the thrust of the criticism is not that they have lots of women in the film, it is that the females are patronizingly characterized to the extent that it compromises the film. Remember how these people tend to worship the original incarnation of Leia, who was arguably one of the first great strong female leads in cinema. On the other hand, most of the men in the film are comically pathetic. Here are some examples of women who have made extensive criticism of the female characters:

A female who hates the film, in particular 'Rose' who she regards to be worse than Jar Jar Binks:

A feminist who hates the film from beginning to end, and who has made another video where she argues that the original 1977 Star Wars is vastly more feminist than 'The Force Awakens'. She is extremely critical of Rey's character and points out "Women are people too, I want to see women who are human and have a character arc." She also points out the male characters such as Hux are portrayed as complete morons:

An Asian female who comes straight out and says "Rian Johnson had no balls and could not stand up to Kathleen Kennedy." Funnily enough, she makes the exact same comment as I did about the Hux opening scene being like something out of 'Spaceballs'...

I agree the main criticism isn't about too many female characters, I was only responding to that ridiculous video cutting out all the women

But both Errant and yourself both seemed to make comments that rolled all critics of the women characters in the film into one universal lump. It is easy to make sweeping generalizations while waggling the finger at those who are critical of the films obvious weaknesses:

the toys out the pram scenario hits peak internet, a fan edit cutting out women has been put out there...

star wars fans are really showing their evolutionary worth...

I've seen some horrible things said about the Rose character and her actress. It is very unfortunate that there are a few people who turn their frustration into really spiteful personal comments. Those particular reactions are unacceptable, but I understand the frustration that drives it because the character is absolutely terrible, as is the actress and how she has been directed. When there is that many people making very legitimate complaints about terrible aspects of the film, there are always going to be some people that express it in unacceptable ways. They are not necessarily indicative of the thinking of all of those who are critical of the character.

Personally, I was just bored and switching off at most of the points she entered the film. I was also actually hoping key characters would die. So when she knocked Finn out of the way of that beam (an absolutely potty piece of story line) I was more upset that she had stopped the film thinning out someone crap from the herd. Even Finn got out and said "What the fuck did you do that for?" And then she kissed him, which at the time I took as a last act before death thing. But a lot of people seemed to think that was part of a romance sub plot, which if it is, completely passed me by.

I was also a bit suprised to see Amanda Lawrence turn up in this film. She is a very capable and experienced actress, and she can do this rubbish in her sleep, but I felt that the way they shot her was almost like they were trying to bait the mob into going for her because of her large nose (which has not come to pass). There was so much agenda in the film, like deliberately making the fan favourite blue milk disgusting, stopping Chewbacca eat the space chicken, space vegas and all the evil rich people there gambling their war profits, freeing the animals and letting them roam free etc. It just seemed like people with an agenda were trying to use Star Wars to batter anyone that has a different outlook.

Ner is it fuck though. Star Wars is about more than just catering to kids. Should The Magnificent Seven cater to kids? The originals were more than 'kids films'. Indiana Jones is more than a kids film. Disney's own Pirates of the Caribbean series are more than just kids films. This whole idea of 'oh well the kids are happy' is a load of fuckin' shit.

Exactly. Plenty of kids films have been well made and stand up in their own right. The original Star Wars trilogy. Indy. Pirates of the Caribbean. Harry Potter. The Goonies. Shrek. Hook. Even fuckin' Toy Story. There's no excuse for the absolute shambles Disney have churned out here. None whatsoever. So fuck if a few bairns got a bit wide eyed seeing a yella bellied gonk on a space horse, it's fuckin' shit.

Mate, I was responding directly to the video that was posted removing women from TLJ and the subset of wanker fanboys who have been having a go at women generally per se. I thought it was clear that was only calling out that group and not any other criticisms of poorly created female characters (which I partly agree with) or of TLJ generally (which I partly agree with). Sorry for any confusion

my beef is with the (predominately) male juvenile star wars fan boi's who are taking this films 'issues' above & beyond what would be considered sensible behavior for intelligent humans in the year 2018. i could say they're all virginal in their outlook to females, but that would be too sweeping... but they do all appear to have problems with "females" and interacting with them.

No, you quite clearly tried to use these people to get at all Star Wars fans. You said it "star wars fans are really showing their evolutionary worth..." It is that kind of aloof snidey dismissive and divisive arrogance that permeates the film and contributes to it being such an utter shambles of political dogma that craps all over a few million people that waited a couple of years hoping to spend a couple of hours escaping the reality of the stinking dogbox of life.

Not as far as I'm aware, only thing I've seen him in was Hail, Caesar though.
may not be him talking then, the trailers are some times edited to confuse.

its a big ask mind, filling harrison ford's shoes in a truly iconic role... the way the star wars fandom reacted over the last jedi portray of luke may only be the tip of the iceburg if they don't like what they've done to young solo...

Didn't think it'd be out this summer. Have they brought it forward in the hope that people forget about the last one?

Well they're suggesting he's joining the Empire... that'll not wash. I think they're delibrately playing with the audience there - he's probably just posing as a wannabe recruit so he can nick summit.
