They've played for the test team before like. Buttler doesn't play enough red ball stuff to be considered now
Hales hasn't had long enough. We need to tell Buttler to play more county cricket then.
We picked 2 one day specialists who couldn't get in the ODI team for test cricket in Vince and Malan. Very odd although Malan did far better than I expected.

Buttler is averaging over 30 in tests, decent for a keeper but he's a match winner too. Very liable to get 10 or less in couple of innings then a quick 70 in the next that can take an average score to over 400.
Hales hasn't been given half the chances Ballance has. Admittedly Ballance was brilliant until he was sussed. Hales is averaging the same as Stoneman and 5 more than Vince. 100% deserving of another chance.

Most of the point of playing Buttler is to get the most out of Bairstow who is world class batman. Yes, I know he wants to keep but it's a team game and plenty of other keeper / batmen have improved their batting greatly after ditching the gloves, Sangakara, McCullum etc.
We missed a trick back end of last summer by not selecting an in form Hales with his performance giving him a chance to stake his claim for the ashes.
