Odi series against Australia

An evenly contested test match can be a wholly absorbing contest and, like many, I prefer it to a 50 over contest which, although I enjoy, I regard it as my 2nd choice i.e. I rate it 2nd. I find it difficult to understand why I should be labelled a snob for having such a preference.

You said it was a second rate competition which is quite different to saying it’s not your preference.

In most cricketing countries in the world, ODIs are not considered second rate. They generally attract bigger crowds than Tests

Apologies: that wasn’t you

Not you personally mate, nothing against your choice.

But the people calling it 'silly cricket' and pyjama cricket I find snobbery.

You could actually argue 50 over cricket is much more of a even playing field nowadays as so often the home wins test matches as conditions so heavily in their favour.

Maybe so, but when you buy tickets to a 2nd rate competition, you have to be prepared to expect some players to be missing ahead of the more important games. Being well paid doesn't mean they can just move on from a series like we've just had and keep playing. Let them clear their heads and give them a better chance when it really matters.

ODIs do really matter though. Limited overs cricket is absolutely vital to the game’s sustainability.

A Test win against most teams (apart from possibly Bangladesh and NZ) means more to me than any white ball win, but funnily enough I'm not quite as apathetic to this series now as I was 24 hours ago. Funny what a win can do  Actually have more tickets for England limited overs matches than Tests this summer for the first time ever. Could well be the same next year when the world cup is in town too.

I like all forms of cricket and like to think I'm not a snob but after an Ashes defeat it still feels like a mere consolation. This time last year I was desperate for us to beat the Indians in their back yard in front of sell out one eyed fans in their favourite forms of the game even after getting thrashed in the Tests so I suppose it just depends on the context of a series.

Exactly mate we have a cracking one day side and we should be positive about it.

They are great to watch surely people cannot fail to be entertained by that Roy knock today.

The snobbish attitude to one day cricket is something this board continues to do on a regular basis.
I don't think it's snobbish, I think that's the wrong word. Test cricket and one day cricket are different beasts and you watch it for different reasons. And yes it's entertaining and I've said previously I've enjoyed T20's I've attended ..... but I think the two-and-fro for 4 and 5 day cricket is more absorbing and I like the fact that you don't need to see every ball, because the game unfolds slowly.

My main, in fact my only gripe is that I think T20 in particular will eat County and Tests cricket.

Of course it is, it's down to choice what people prefer, watching a England Australia match in any format is important.

Not sure where the poster gets that the New Zealand test series is far more important why?
Simple, it's a test series. Test cricket is the pinnacle of the game, therefore is more important than anything that isn't a test series.

Agree. Referring to it as "silly" cricket is condescending but not so sure there's much wrong with the term pyjama cricket.

Really don't see the point in having the silly cricket after the Test series, mind.

They've already won the big prize - sure, they'd love the chance to rub Pommie noses in it, but they're not gunna be fully fired up.
Most English cricket fans probably can't be arsed because we're so flat and disillusioned after the Test series.

I know everyone bangs on about '05, but that Series set the tone for the series. The T20 where everyone ganged up on Hussey (i think) made everyone realise we could get up the Australians collective nose and get into them (Tres also states this in his book).

Having them after the series is just the ultimate case of "after the Lord mayor's show", and let's face it, who could seriously give a fuck?

This is the key. Much as the white ball stuff is nice, it should have been played out before The Ashes. We could have used this as a rehersal for the main stuff and gave some of the fringe players a chance to impress. If we are going to pick a hitter (Hales, Roy, Buttler etc or any of the others I wouldn't have anywhere near the Test team) the surely it's better to pick them when they have their confidence up.

That's all fair enough mate, one day cricket is just another format,it's not silly cricket, and the best available players should be playing.

A one day World Cup every four years is more important to me than a test series against New Zealand for example.

We are building towards that, and this new culture of attacking cricket for this last few years is soo refreshing and for the first time in donkey years we have a team who are very capable of winning that World Cup,therefore we should be picking a settled team with our best players preparing for that, not resting players.

In the context it's been used in the past it has been condescending.

Different priorities I suppose, for me, any test match/series beats any limited overs competition, with the Ashes as the ultimate pinnacle of cricket. Therefore I want to see us building for winning them back in 2019 with a long term view of retaining them 4 years from now. If the price of that is the limited overs side having to rest players, it's a small price to pay imho.

There is no reason why your best players can’t play in both formats as Kohli,Root and Smith bear out.

You should not be resting your best players for the whole of a one day series against Australia for a test series against New Zealand with the Ashes four years away!
