How did he bowl? Was his speeds up in the 90s? His figures suggest he was the most economic of all the bowlers.

Didn't bowl 90mph but was hostile. A vastly bigger threat than Woakes.

Roy should have been opening the batting

Don't think so.... completely different game if he played his game in tests he would average 20 at best. Might come off once in 30 games.

Wood should have played, and plunkett should have been given a test too. Both would have been more of a threat then jake ball or chris woakes.

Has he played in a Test yet?
He hasn't. And his first class record is good nut not superb. He has 78 games and an average of 37 but only 8 centuries and when you reckon that Jennings got 7 centuries in one season..........

Still, I wouldn't mind either him or Hales in a Test squad, obviously not opening though as the challenge is different. Wouldn't mind Hales at 3/4

Its quite simple if Wood was fit enough he would have been in the Ashes squad and team from day 1. He was added to the Ashes squad after the rest of the Lions went home in the hope that he could possibly play but he must be miles away from being able to get though a test match without the fear of breaking down again.
He actually must be getting to the stage where he must be considering becoming a one day specialist to prolong his career.

What does he do different to get more pace than Broad or Anderson off a tiny run up?
Do fast bowlers really need wass run ups? Do they actually end up running faster on delivery if they start their run at Scotch Corner? I've never understood that.

This article gives an insight.

'Scaffolding' vital for fast bowlers - Pont
Not everyone is convinced by the ECB's fast bowling programme at Loughborough. , the independent fast-bowling coach who has worked with Dale Steyn and Shoaib Akhtar among others, believes the ECB fails to understand the basic tenets of fast bowling and that it is this failure - not workload management - that continues to hinder progress.

In particular, Pont suggested that there are familiar defining characteristics in the best fast bowlers and that, at present, the ECB do not fully understand how to recognise or coach them.

"We fully understand there are not 1000 ways to throw a javelin, swim, cycle a bike, row a boat or throw a punch yet we seem to have an aberration when it comes to teaching how to bowl fast and straight," Pont told ESPNcricinfo. "And that's purely because structures are not taught.

"One of the greatest discoveries in the modern era is that you can improve your speed and control by altering key parts of your bowling position at the crease. But the difficulty for many coaches has been the challenge of what to help alter and the drill that goes with the positive tweaks.

"There is confusion over a bowler's style, which is unique to them, and their structure, which is common to all. And it is this structure that is the main thing to focus in on.

"By working on the fast bowling skeleton correctly you can make a difference. Understanding how to do that is what makes a coach worth his weight in gold. Managing a fast bowler's workload isn't what makes him bowl fast in the first place. Creating 'scaffolding' so he can do that is what's vital."

Certainly makes more sense than the sh!the that Shine spouts.
