[4th test] Australia v England, Melbourne

The backward fuckers in the dressing room will see that draw as some kind of fantastic result

Still haven't taken 20 wickets on the tour.

Was always the worry going into the series and unfortunately has proven to be our main downfall. Adelaide aside they've looked innocuous at best. Nearly stayed up for tonight in hope but after an hour I had a quiet word with myself and headed off to bed.

Just pleased they've managed to avoid the whitewash which is a miracle in itself thanks to the MCG pitch.

That's what makes it more frustrating though. Numpties like me on an Internet forum knew right from the moment the squad was announced what would happen.

I mean for fuck sake, anyone with an ounce of cricket knowledge knows the likes of Ball, Curran and any other fucker bowling the kookaburra at 77mph in Australia is going to do fuckall.

Even more frustrating when we learnt that lesson last time round.

How much money went into the inquest from the last devacle? All just so the wankers picking the squad could do EXACTLY the same again. If we didn't have anyone who could bowl over 90mph then fair enough, but we do.

If this sounds familiar? It's because it is. I'm sick of saying it, but it's still right.

Who are they then? Which fit and available bowlers did we have to compete with Starc, Cummins and bowl regularly at 90 plus? I don’t know of any.

Haven't we been over this already?

One of which wasn't fit and not bowling anywhere near 90 and the other that doesn't bowl 90 . I would also have taken Plunkett btw but my expectations of him doing much not too great.

He was fit enough to play for the Lions and then the England side that faced a Western Australia XI before Perth - no idea of his pace.

As for Plunkett, yes he does bowl 90mph.

Jofra Archer - currently playing in the Big Bash - can also bowl upwards of 90mph.

Jamie Overton is also capable of bowling 90mph.

Archer has 5 years until he qualifies mate

Massive difference bowling quick in a one day match and bowling quick in a 1st class/test match.
One of the problems with Plunkett has always been keeping his pace up for 3 or 4 spells in a days play. He is actually more of a hit the pitch bowler than an out and out quick. Having said that like most people on here he should have been in that Ashes squad especially when Wood was not going.

Tell that to Jack Torrance. Liam Plunkett does not bowl 90mph other than the odd delivery. he hasn't done for many years on a consistent basis.

Aye. Good point, forgot about him - no idea if he's fit and firing like (or was during the domestic season), maybe @TheRey can enlighten us (??) - but he's another option.

What's more - can't Mark Footitt bowl upwards of 90mph too?

Fair enough, forgot about that. It's a queer set up, as he's playing domestic cricket as an Englishman though isn't he?

He doesn't - hes 86/88 ordinarily. Bowls aggressively and I would have taken him but he rarely gets it 90plus these days. Hes in the one day squad. See for yourself.

Starc and Cummins regularly drop under 90, the point is - if he can bowl over 90mph the odd ball then he can be effective. He could be used sparingly so that he keeps his pace and fitness, the whole idea is that he would offer something different to what we have. All the others aren't able to bowl 90mph any ball, no matter how hard they try. In fact, they're more likely to drop into the 70's and so having someone who even when labouring bowls 82-87 is a big plus on someone who is 77-82 regularly.

I think it's also worth considering too, that Australian conditions are very friendly to Fast bowlers - I remember during the last tour Sky doing a piece on the difference in pace through the air in warmer, steamier climates.

He is actually more of a hit the pitch bowler than an out and out quick.

He is classified in Playfair and on Cricinfo as 'Right Arm Fast' so regardless of what you or I think, the statisticians have him down as being 'out and out quick'.

Meaker and Jamie Overton were injured, but everyone and his dog would have had Plunkett in the squad, apart from the selectors. Even one of could have added some depth to the squad.

Its much more than that though. They shouldn't be picked purely on the basis that they can bowl the odd ball at 90 mph or above. Starc and Cummins can bowl 90 mph routinely and Hazlewood sometimes but they are all quality consistent quick bowlers.

I would have picked Plunkett because hes better than bowlers we did pick but he isn't as quick as the Aussie trio. Olly Stone is rapid but I didn't see anyone on here putting his name forward a few weeks ago.
