I used to really look forward to an Ashes series either home or away, find them distinctly average and predictable these days and not just because we are getting a good kicking. Maybe we are playing them too often or is it a bit like football where the characters just aren't there anymore?

Well we've obviously got characters as they keep getting into the wrong parts of papers.

The Aussie team is as bland as hell though.

I am quite sure the players were picked purely based on what they thought was the best team to win the Ashes and nothing else.

Its like the England football team mentally not strong enough, there was no players left at home apart from Stokes who would have made any difffrence imo.

It really is the sort of shambles you couldn't deliberately organise. There are so many obvious ways to improve English Cricket and indeed the England Team but time after time they choose the wrong path.

The inclusion of a horribly out of form Jake Ball, and Mason Crane demonstrates players are being picked for reasons other than form.

No point in that. Need to build for future now. For what it's worth I think the latter 2 should already be out there

Hales and buttler are in their 20s still. Buttler keeper, bairstow as a batsman.

Great players in the shorter format but not sure where they fit in. Could make a case for Buttler if he decided to play some red ball stuff but at the moment he isn't interested. Only place for Hales would be 5 but Malan has established that spot for himself

He was average anyway and he rarely plays red ball cricket

It's the same with the England football team, why do people persist that people would purposely not pick the best side to win games and base decisions on squads and teams for any other reason !!

Now of course everyone will have different opinions on who should have been picked and make some very valid points , however it is not a valid point to suggest players were picked for any other reason than winning games.

They have clearly been players picked like Vince who's form and average was not as good as others, however rightly or wrongly he was picked because somebody somewhere thought he would do a good job, not for some unknown other reason

Players are not picked for the Ashes because of the county they play for,they are picked to win games!!!

Or the players need to stand up and be counted, starting by the better players batting in problem important positions in the order rather than where they prefer to bat.

Players aren't good enough. Mentally and physically weak as I've said since the squad was announced
