Save Doxfords West Gateway

It was only until the council said they were going to pull it down that anybody was bothered about this building. If the new road was not going in and it needed to be demolished the place would have fell down on it's own. Should we not have saved some of the Cornings factory to remember the glass industry or kept some of the Monkwearmouth pit buildings to remember the miners - so why are we trying to save a run down building for shipbuilding that is going to cost stupid money to put right. The fire station in the town was in the right place and was worth saving, this is not in my opinion.
Sad but true. It looks pretty shit tbf.

Of course it looks poor at the minute, thats why restoration is needed.

What difference does it make why and when support for cause is initiated. Its how most acrion groups are formed, when something or somebody is under threat.

How anybody who has even the flimsiest sense of pride in the history of Sunderland would scoff at the idea of saving an historic and last remaining building such as this is beyond me.

For the record, it cost more for the council to buy the 3 onion bhajis currently rotting away down roker than it would to save this building.

So, other than randomers who find themselves wandering the streets of Pallion and have nothing better to do than walk around a knackered old building with a nice tiled floor ... what the FUCK purpose would this building serve? We have nostalgia and history in abundance, served up in quality locations with a lot of thought.

The "onion bhajis" to which you refer are flexible cost-effective educational units that can be used for a number of purposes and moved to any number of relevant spots. Something for the bairns. You know, the future generations that need to learn in a decent environment that's outside of school and the home?

I sense that the problem for you is that they look like a type of Indian food. Would you prefer stotty cakes or panackalty shaped buildings?

For same principal, Doxford International is part of the history of Sunderland, should we keep that going long after the call centre businesses end?

The amount of 'Sunderland' people on here who don't give a Shyte about the past history and hertitage of the town/city is woeful, hearts of a pea and brains of a mushy.

They are part of the reason why Sunderland has zero identity these days.

It’s like the bridge. The amount of people on here who just wanted a plain, cheap concrete crossing because it’s ‘just a bridge’ was depressing.

If they had their way, every building in Sunderland would look like communist-era concrete blocks. Sadly, the city centre does look just like that in parts.

I give a shiny shite I just don’t see anything in this building worth saving. It’s pretty ugly, just because people went to work there doesn’t make it at all significant and it’s not something i’d Want to see at the Vaux site.

It’s an absolute non starter this one. Save donations and effort for something else another day.

Well said!

Apart from anything else it’s an ugly building with no architectural merit.

Laughable to suggest we save a pebbledashed derelict shithole

It is disgraceful that the town that was once one of the largest producers of ships in the world, has absolutely nothing to honor the men and women who worked there. We should have a ship building museum built on the banks of the Wear, with this gatehouse as the main entrance.

I love a bit of gliry.

Joking aside, the fact GC is on board might help a bit. Well, it will help raise his profile!

Edit: he's not on board. He got sent some bumph, and he replied with "thanks"

:lol::lol: @moshpit

Apart from the keel line, the monument just off keel square and the Maritime museum

Saving any thing we suddenly spot cos its old etc does not constitute conservation, knowing what to let go and what to save doesn't equate to not giving a shyte .Every building getting knocked down is history of sorts. There's loads of stuff around the City and region showing our past,no ones erasing anything

The building has been pebble dashed since it closed....take a look at the pictures of it when it was opened, its far from ugly.

There's also a 76 page report from the NAA on the process of being uploaded on the campaign page outlining the building's architectural and cultural significance to the area.

Fancy pretending celebs are interested
Go away please, i really don't care what you say or think.

A bit like the afore-mentioned Mr Clarke, then?
