Anyone interested in helping to save the last remaining original piece of the shipyards should sign the petiton in the link below.

The guy running it has put some tremendous pictures up of it in its heyday, it would certainly be a fantastic addition to the Vaux site renovated back gliry.

It looks like George Clarke is now on board to help support the cause.

Cheers

I love a bit of gliry.

Joking aside, the fact GC is on board might help a bit. Well, it will help raise his profile!

Edit: he's not on board. He got sent some bumph, and he replied with "thanks"

signed. its not the most inspiring of buildings, but unfortunately its practically all we have left of the yards

in Rotterdam they have old cranes, old dockyard equipment, boats and loads of the other stuff dotted all over the city, most of it looks like it was just being used yesterday as they have been renovated and left in position. we literally have nothing. not one thing

I remember being a 15 year old apprentice in the 1950's and being sent out through the gates many times by the tradesmen to buy one cigarette ( Passing Cloud, Turf, etc.) from the small shop outside the gate.
The shop used to open a packet and sell one fag for 1d , old money.
I'd take the cigarette back to the men and they would cut it perfectly into two half's. If the cigarette was damaged you got a clip around the ear.
Working men needing to do that was real poverty, no food banks those days.
My first pay packet: £1. 8s . 4d

It looks awful at the minute but back in the day it was quite something. There's pictures up on the facebook page of the original mosaic floor and staircases in the annex buildings....almost regal, must have been some serious money going through the tills.

Its so depressing how the entire industry has been erased isnt it.

Strip away the pebbledash to reveal the original brickwork underneath the outer building and it may look alright, historically significant on a local level so it's worth saving

It's what it represents more than anything. Would make a fantastic restaurant or pub on the vaux site i reckon.

and do what with it? Its derelict and from what I understand unsafe. I'm all for heritage landmarks but theres pretty much no point in keeping it unless it could be moved elsewhere, get rid and lets move the city forward.

It was only until the council said they were going to pull it down that anybody was bothered about this building. If the new road was not going in and it needed to be demolished the place would have fell down on it's own. Should we not have saved some of the Cornings factory to remember the glass industry or kept some of the Monkwearmouth pit buildings to remember the miners - so why are we trying to save a run down building for shipbuilding that is going to cost stupid money to put right. The fire station in the town was in the right place and was worth saving, this is not in my opinion.

^^ this.

In this modern day, it's all to easy to kick up a fuss (nay, a furore) for the slightest of things.

Social media can be a wonderful thing, but when you look at things like "Seaham Have Your Say" and "North East Foodies", it gives the idiots of the world a platform - and they actually think that because they have a voice, EVERY FUCKER must hear it.

This happened with Farage, Yaxley-Lennon, Len Lowther, Fransen & Trump.

In its most extreme and divisive form, we have subliminal infiltration (on social media) that leads to disasters like Brexit.

The built a glass centre on the site of a shipyard. Why not rebuild a bit of a shipyard on the site of a brewery?
