Vietnam War prog on BBC4 the neet

Been watching this. I'm still a bit confused about the whole point of it (the war no the series)

That bit where the guy was filmed shot in the head, wow. I've never seen anything documented in real life like that, really got to me.

Can't get my head round why people go to war and all them wasted lives and we don't learn from from our past mistakes.

The point of the war was that there wasn't a point. Vietnam was a country that wanted its independence from colonial France and then a cold war scenario ensued when there was no need for one. It was totally mismanaged as far as I can tell. 60 thousand needless deaths on the US side and many more than that in the rest of that 'theatre'.

Looks as if the US spent the majority of the time trying to extricate themselves.

I was quite surprised france was involved only 20 odd years after not being happy about Germans in their country and they are doing similar to the Vietnamese

Watched 3 episodes so far, can highly recommend this. Just shows that lessons from the past are never learned. Don’t get into something without a plan as to how to get out.

Just finished watching the fourth episode, about to press play on the fifth. Easily one of the best documentary series I’ve ever seen. Gripping, it certainly is (rarely do I watch something without being half on my phone at the same time), and very emotional.

Appalling waste of lives on both sides while Johnson dithered for weeks on end over a war he couldn't win.
He comes across as an utter dick imo does Johnson
Great series. I only knew vague stuff about it.
Might watch his civil war one next - it's on Netflix I think

Outstanding, I'm all caught up now. As with all the best war reportage/history, it seems scarcely conceivable that it happened. War is a terrifying lunacy every time. But it's why stuff like this is so important. People make the same mistake again and again, you have to do everything you can to reverse that internal logic in us that makes going to war such a remedial process. Not remotely convinced there won't be something just as big if not bigger in my lifetime and likewise all for nothing.

Over one million vietnamese killed including civillians. The USA never learns and will repeat itself over and over.

Brilliant programme this. Thought this weeks instalments went up a notch in intensity...that interview with McCain put Trumps comments into perspective.

Didn't know too much about the whole subject before watching and absolutely gripped. Such a mess and so pointless..pretty staggering disregard for human life shown by Johnson in those old recordings too I thought.

Just found out the episodes run by the BBC are a ‘censored’ version with some episodes being cut by up to 20 minutes compared to the originals aired on PBS
