BBC: Why is heroin killing so many people?

UK drugs policy is absolute joke to be honest. The countries who've reformed in recent years have seen massive positive changes yet our government is too stubborn and scared to stick its head above the parapet.

They're not even"radical" solutions, just common sense.

She is already on methadone and still takes heroin as well. If she seriously wanted to come off the heroin she would speak to her methadone prescriber to get the methadone increased so that she loses the urge for heroin.

I know it’s not necessarily a simple solution but if someone won’t even take the first step to coming off heroin then why should anyone else care? No one comes off drugs unless they absolutely want to, you cannot force them to cease being addicted. They have to do the work and there is no easy way. The help is there to those who seek it, but the addict MUST want to stop, otherwise it’s just a waste of everyone’s time.

Cheaper than crime to pay for heroin.

I read years ago that the punter was addicted to the rush of getting the money because what they bought was so cut there was virtually no narcotic in it.

This. Sometimes life is cruel.

Give it up then? The problem is, if it's so easily available for free every day there's absolutely no incentive at all to give up.
I don't think you understand the issue enough to comment if you think it's easy for people to "just give it up". Clearly, the idea is that it wouldn't be "freely" available in the sense that you could just walk in and get some whenever you fancied. You would, however, get a clean but managed dose and be supervised by a health professional.

I see. And would these people then become functioning members of society?

On a human level, people are dying because of lack of purity. They're also getting addicted to things like prescription opiates and moving on to harder stuff because they're dependent and heroin is easier to come by than your typical codeine prescription.

It's also bloody expensive to combat. Why not legalise and regulate it? That way you can tax and manage the purity and take the money out of the criminal organisations' hands?

More so than they are now.

They are getting a dose of medical grade heroin daily just by going...at a cost of 15k a year. Plus of course dole money, housing benefit and all.the other miriad of benefits no doubt available
Why should I pull my pods off everyday to pay for those wankers. ...15k is around about what I paid in tax and ni last year. So my contribution to the uk is effectively shot up some druggies arm....maybe cheaper hiring hitmen

That Louis Theroux documentary in USA about said drug was hard to watch at times but just highlights how important our NHS and GPs are with 1 in 4 in a population of 49,000 being addicted to Opiums as soon as they stopped handing out prescription pills.

That’s why we have methadone. The methadone can be titrated so that the person doesn’t crave heroin but they have to be honest with their prescriber and tell them that they are still using. It really has to come from the addict.
