Star Trek : Discovery

Watched The Orville 4 and 5 last night and enjoyed them both. I'm amazed that CBS/Paramount haven't sued them, so much is blatantly ripped off from TNG. Everything from the opening theme to the sound that equipment on the bridge makes. Shuttlecrafts, tick. Holodeck, tick. Android science office, tick.

But there's a huge difference. Where TNG had (IMHO) a cast largely devoid of charisma, and all those little human things that makes it fun to watch an ensemble acting out a story (sharp dialog, personality quirks, humour, sarcasm, piss taking, irritation, and so on) The Orville's has it in spades (as did TOS). The practical joking in E05 (Mr Potato Head and the amputated leg) was just class, for example. One of many belly laughs in E04 and E05, that didn't detract from some proper sci fi stories at all. I also like the subtle cultural references, such as the No. 1 describing the cast from Friends (E04) when being brutally interrogated about where her friends were ("don't hurt the monkey!"). I bet a few missed that.

I'm already enjoying it more that I enjoyed most of TNG, in fact.

Except for E03, which was the mindnumbingly boring, hamfisted moralistic blandfest that too much of TNG suffered from. While E04 was also "classic Trek", it was classic Trek of the good kind.

Nice to see big celebs like Liam Neeson and Charlize Theron making appearances, and to hear that Season 2 is all but ordered.

PS - in E04 I noticed that the No. 1 also has a forehead nipple, right between her eyes. Be warned!

3rd episode was the one where they wanted to give the baby a sex change wasn't it?

Proper Trek that. Takes a contentious issue from today then tells it...in space!
Found that a low point of the series. If you're trying to play it straight for an episode choose a less miserable subject.

In reality you'd respect cultural differences and hoy a chucky on it which is what happened.

The old girl being the great poet stuck out a mile

I agree, it was easily the weakest Orville episode to date.

It was classic Trek though.

Agree, The Orville feels more like Star Trek than Discovery. Hope it changes! We still really need a proper new Trek series, this just isn't it.

Yep I just seen ST:D Episode 5 and while there's a couple of things that are nice, there's a ton of things that are not. Overall, it was a very forgettable episode and they have managed to not only make the Klingons ugly, but utterly boring to watch ffs!.
The Orville is capturing 'Trek better for me. Merging the two together would be even better!.. Maybe arrange a TV transporter accident!

I can't get away with Michael either, she's too edgy and just doesn't fit in with the original timeline. She'd be at home in the Kelvin timeline.

Yeah the Klingons are really annoying, I hate the way they speak and some of the wording they use is cringeworthy.

Agree, these 'new' Klingon are absolute baktag

There's no aggression, no threat, no speed, no anger, no edge. All things that could have been enhanced with these whizzy special fx

Instead they sound like they have a heavy cold and shamble about as fast as Mickey Quinn to a RSPCA hearing

Nee wonder they got lashed arl ower by a tardigrade

I think she's the best character in the show. That's not saying much mind as they seem to like killing off what appear to be central members of the cast. Just as you start to think this one's ok, a good addition to the cast, bang she's been mauled to death by a giant alien dog. I'm not keen on the captain he seems a bit spiv like and isn't the main character which I think a star trek captain should be.
Overall though after watching the first episode and thinking it was shit I'm now really enjoying it and looking forward to what comes next.
Hopefully it will be the wiping out of the whole Klingon race as they are really bloody annoying. I mean what was wrong with these Klingons, spoke damned good English as well.

Apparently Kol is from the House of Kor. I bet sitting down to Christmas dinner is a barrel of laughs in that household.

I'm wondering how long it will be before we hear the word 'augments'
