Arshad leaves Durham

Marty Emmerson reporting on his twitter feed what people appeared to know on here about a month ago that Benny contract is up and has left the club. Still nowt from the club itself it appears.
Pity there not so slow with the membership renewals!

A few n twitter trying to count how many players we've got.

I get 16 (using the player profiles page on the DCCC website) and of those 2 are contracted to England and 2 to Ireland.

Not including Smith and assuming the rumour that Harding has gone is true.

So, Lewis needs to get busy.

But I thought Durham stuck by lads out of loyalty, read it on here. Or Perhaps it's as I suspected (or knew really as it's common sense) that they will stick with lads who they believe will make the grade (sensible really).
Clubs look after themselves (as they should and need to) and players look after themselves (as they should and need to). Simple really.

Season before last I thought he was developing as a good T20 player ..... but the last time I saw him in a 1st class game he looked innocuous, although tbf he was just returning from injury so maybe he wasn't firing on all cylinders and needed more games.

With Durham letting people go on top of the ones that have chosen to go I wonder what's in their minds. Is it a case of not being able to afford them? They know they can get better players in? Or need the room in the squad to allow young'uns to be promoted from the 2nd's?

The plus side of having a much slimmer squad next year will be that hopefully young lads performing well in the NEPL are given a decent chance to perform in the 2s. Granted things like work/education commitments have to be considered for these lads, but I'm sure back in the day when the NEPL was formed, one of the key selling points was that it bridges the gap between the club and county games. I've always thought there were 2 or 3 players too many on full time deals who pretty much only played 2nd team cricket without troubling the 1st team on many occasions.

Concern though is the 2018 squad at the moment is skeletal rather than slim. Apart from Hickey, and rumour it was more an attitude problem than one of ability with him, decisions to release the others was probably of mutual benefit. Presumably Harte has been retained and with Smith signed there should be cover in the batting. A fit Wood would be a massive bonus but we certainly need at least one more experienced seamer. Presumably Ireland will now have a busier schedule which means Poytner and McCarthy will be available to Durham less often

Loyalty does not exist at Durham CCC. Why should it after the way the club has behaved. Nor does it care anything about the supporters, hence the total absence of any information.

Durham have done well by Arshard, has warranted a deal last few years, think he will struggle to get another county

i think it is simpler than that. we have limited funds, we can only afford to pay people who will be available to play cricket. preferably all forms but arshad, sadly, just has not been able to stay fit consistently. we've had him on the books for [rough guess] 3 years? and he has been available around half of that time. probably due to this he hasn't really kicked on.

sadly we can't justify employing people who aren't available to play cricket and aren't developing.

his first 10 games or there abouts were his best for us by a long LONG way.

He actually leaves with very respectable FC figures [27.4 with bat and 26..5 with ball] and unlike some i think he may well find a county willing to take him on. fitness the issue not talent, although on a downward trend

I would have thought at the very least Benny will be playing plenty of 2nd team county cricket next season as a trialist if counties are worried about his injury record.
