Star Trek : Discovery

I think we'll start in one universe and end up in the other at some point. I just can't see how they get from how it looks now to 60s Trek in just a couple of years (because The Cage was set a good few years before Kirk and co) without a universe switch. To do it in the prime timeline is too big a leap to ask of an audience as obsessed as Trekkers. Like I said, I hope it's great, but it'll have to work very hard to be great in the prime canon.

That's what I am trying to get my head around, supposed to be set 10 years before the original series, so if that is the case and it is set in the prime universe, then it's set more or less around the time of The Cage, because The Enterprise would be around under the command of Pike and with Spock serving as an officer. Then if we do learn it's set in the Kelvin timeline, the Enterprise won't be around because it's launch was pushed back due to changes in the timeline.

Jonathan frakes confirmed at least one episode features the 'mirror universe'- not sure what that means for which universe this is set in mind

The Kelvin timeline is a different course of history, starting the moment that the Narada appeared back in time, not another universe. So the mirror universe still exists, so a story involving it says nothing about whether it's Kelvin or original.

I knar that, I was just saying ;) i realise it doesnt prove owt.
the mirror universe is however very much associated with prime story line wise though to the layman.

However I suppose a Kelvin timeline interaction with it would be a neat twist.

Personally I hope the shoe is set in prime....but that's just me:)

Because they are TV shows made 50 years apart.

Why do Worf's head ridges change throughout Next Gen? Why does technology on the Enterprise seemingly take a step backwards between Star Trek V and VI? How do the turboshafts on the bridge move between films too?

I get that they've hamstrung themselves with the time period setting but it's a good bet that they will recognise the change in design aesthetic somehow.

I'm just glad to have Star Trek back on TV.

Exactly. Sometimes 'suspension of belief' is important. The contemporary famous one is GoT- how do they travel around Westeros so quick? Just cos.....cos it's necessary for the show.

Why will this look different to the 60s.......cos it's filmed in 2017. Sometimes you've just gotta forget about some stuff and remember the story is important.

However.......they were clever in DS9 'Trials and Tribbleations' where Dax made it simply sound like the big differences in dress and technology was simply due to changing fashions, like how tricorders used to be leather.

Maybe during Kirks time, the alpha quadrant was going through a 1960s revival stage;)

I got up at stupid o'clock to watch it live via work VPN and a colleague's CBS account. Can't get the bugger to work though.

I feel a sick day coming on.

I absolute love Trials & Tribbilations - so cleverly done and loads of fun

I do wonder whether that's something that's been misreported. It's not a great leap for a Kelvin/Prime crossover to be misinterpreted as a Mirror Universe episode.

That's the thing for me - it's got to be done cleverly. Not just ignored or handwaved away. Ultimately CBS chose the prequel route that failed with Enterprise because it was weighted down with all that canon and future continuity, so it's up to them to make it work within the existing timeline. There are several ways you can do it I reckon, my favourite idea is the Kelvin crossover if they've managed to work it out between Paramount and themselves (there's already some crossover in Star Trek Online, so they're working together at some level) because that's the most elegant solution, but you could have some kind of computer virus that forces the regression to the TOS technology maybe.

I personally don't think enterprise was hampered by being a prequel. It's failure was due to viewing figures, probably in reception to poor storylines in early seasons that viewers just didn't enjoy. But I don't think those storylines were hampered by canon.....they were just a bit crap.
In fact, some of the best enterprise storylines were late on when Many Coto took over and actually embraced cannon - romulans , explanation of Klingon foreheads, augments explanation etc. Unfortunately it was too late and many had already packed it in.
There's a rich cannon to be mined if they're clever

S5 would have been romulan war...probs for a few seasons. But we'll never know cos of earlier crap

Just saw two episodes listed on Netflix to watch... taking the bairn to school then coming back to watch.. reviews are good so far from around the web
