Changing careers

Has anyone drastically changed their career to something in a completely different field? I'm currently working in finance after sort of falling into it after Uni and wanting some job security after turning down some jobs in the City (did an internship at an investment bank who laid off 5,000 people during my time there).

My current job isn't fullfilling at all and while I've got the ACA qualification under my belt, the thought of spending the rest of my career/life auditing accounts or working accounts makes me feel ill.

I've been thinking about pilot school to become a commercial pilot. I've set aside some cash to go towards the huge training fees but I don't know whether it's a bit late in the day for that specific career (I'm 28). I'd love to do it though, but I'm currently on decent money and would initially see me probably half my salary for at least 3-4 years.

There's a lot in the whole "you only live once" mentality but then again, f***ing it up
from a relatively comfortable position doesn't make it any better.

I keep toying with the pilot idea mind

Marine Engineer Officer, or Deck Officer.

3 years training, paid. Work 6 months of the year and earn a wedge tax free.

Yes. I did a PhD in Molecular Biology /Biochemistry for four years and now work in software/tech.

Was easy to do mind as I'm still in my mid-20s.
I'm thinking I'm at the age where I need to decide either way. Stick or twist. If I change now, I could be fully qualified by 30 and have another 25 years of career left.

You can't seriously want to give up that Bloomberg terminal though, surely? ;)

'This who can't teach' was my philosophy after 24 years in the army. It's rewarding, but exhausting!

I've never changed but do have similar thoughts from time to time (similar age and I'm CIMA qualified).

If you do stick to finance, have you tried decision support or business partnering? Still not riveting but more interesting than audit or financial control.

I was thinking about a move into Corporate Finance as it's a bit more up my street. Not a lot of work going in the North East in that area though.

I am. I've got a job myself but there's not much about commercial wise unless you want to work on cruise ships or ferry's. The downturn in the North Sea has saturated the jobs market.

Teekay have a few jobs, mainly for Asia, but have recently won contracts for shuttle tankers in the North sea.

Loads of tanker jobs, BP having a massive junior officer recruitment drive. The North Sea isn't the be all and end all.

Didn't realise BP were hiring, haven't seen anything on the usual sites-have to have a look cheers.

I've never worked North Sea personally, just mean that because all those jobs went they were a lot of people needing work. We've just got a load of 2nds at our place who have all been chiefs offshore for the last 20 odd years.

What you worked on prior? I know of some opportunities.

One of the lads I used to work did the same thing (he was a similar age maybe a year or two younger) and quit to train as a pilot. He qualified and was working for Virgin last I heard - seemed a lot happier than when working as an engineer

Cruise ships and then yachts mainly. Back commercial at the moment. You?

LNG/Tankers

Teekay are desperate for 3rd Assistants at the moment and I know a lad theyve taken on. He came from containers so had none of the required endorsements, but theyre gonna put him through them all and cross train him to LNG. Its 3:2 and 36k I can forward the app and email if you like.

Cheers - I'm on 8 on 8 off and more than that as it is like. What's the chances of promotion like? Dead man's shoes here.
