Just been billed £400 for tiny bump on van I hired from Avis at ncl airport. Nobody available to inspect before I left, so I checked alone & was OK. Left it at 1600 yesterday & fine but again nobody there. Just a key drop.

Van was left in drop off area open 24/7 with other cars in & out.

Email this morning saying inspection at 0915 today & there's a bump as if it's been hit overnight.

I've complained but anyone got any advice? Seems well dodgy.

Ask them to prove it was you who damaged it and it hasn't been done over night?
Surely they've fucked up by not having someone there to inspect it in the first place.

Maybe should have taken pics of the van time stamped so you had a bit of proof?
As for the damage, I agree they'll be twats blaming the last one who had it when they finally notice a bump.
Unless you noted the damage before you got it, or took pics or there's CCTV doubt there's much you can do as I assume in the agreement you signed you'll be liable for all damage

Same happened to me with a hire car at Cardiff. Write to them saying you have no knowledge of the damage and insisting it must have happened while the vehicle was not in your possession.

It worked for me.

You sign contract at terminal, on an e-reader. That's got the diagram on of vehicle where you'd normally highlight bumps. Once done, they then deliver the van to where the long stay car park is. But of course by then you've signed the papers. Guy there said he was busy & just passed me keys. Said all was OK to go without walk round.

In afternoon he wasn't even there.

I assume they would have to prove it. Their fault if they didn't.

Enterprise have done me once and tried to do me 2 more times at work for hire van. Supposedly they don't mark damage wider than 1" across on the way out, but its amazing how the damage can grow to over 1" when its returned. Robbing bastards.
