He didn't support slavery.

The confed states voted legally to leave the union and Lincoln went to war with those states for doing it.

It was at this point Lee put his State before his country and fought against an invading army. You need to understand that the United States were built on each State governing itself rather than obeying to one rule which is why a lot of Americans to this day are State before country.

For a slave supporting confed leader see Nathan Bedford Forrest. Had the statue been if him I could understand both sides arguing. Lee wasn't a slave owner/supporter.
