Looks like going to be made redundant in September. Worked for same company 16 years, well out of touch with searching the job market.

Any recommendations for best place to look for IT jobs? Primarily on-premise infrastructure design and administration on VMware and Microsoft technologies.

I guess I'll need to get some training in too, Azure and Amazon AWS seem to be the big thing at the moment?

Update your LinkedIn, the jobs will start cropping up almost immediately in my experience.

Is LinkedIn not just filled with recruitment consultants bullshitting to get you on their books? Still, an avenue to explore, thanks.

Any thoughts on current buzzword technologies employers are looking for? All seems to be cloud and devops?

Got my current job directly through the MD - She was happy as no recruitment fees to pay and I was happy as it added a couple of thousand on to my starting salary!

One of my colleagues was approached by an agency via LinkedIn when he wasn't looking for a new job and he took up the offer. There is a setting for 'actively looking for a new job'.

Reed jobs is apparently mostly authentic, I think that some on indeed are hit and miss.

I attended a one day training course on azure messaging last week it's quite interesting.

Linkedin for me too. Had 4 gigs since I went contracting, all through LinkedIn contact. Perm jobs pop up all the time too.

LinkedIn all day, was approached a couple of months back by a company, got the job, my current place counter offered - big payrise for fuck all

Thanks all. A look round those sites today, the majority of jobs advertised for Sunderland/Newcastle seem to want you to know every technology ever conceived for not-very-impressive salaries.
Looks like I'll need to brush up on cloud and SCCM at least and maybe look at contracting. Always fancied it, but I guess now the decision is being made for me, nothing to lose...

Try approaching Aspire. I reckon they'll like your skill set. AWS and Azure is the way to go if you can get the training in but if a company can pick someone up without paying fees they'll gladly pay for some training. Steer clear of Nigel Frank recruitment. The others in the North East are all ok. Good luck.

Thanks for that. I did see a job with Aspire although looked more desktop deployment related.
Any reason why not Nigel Frank, just out of interest?

Because they're not very good or nice. I work for a software house and we deal with all the north east based agencies and they're all ok - Nigel Wright, NRG, Solutions, BMC, and Harvey Nash. We only ever have problems with NF. Steer clear or go in eyes open. I'd call Aspire and ask to talk to their recruitment team. For the sake of not paying between £5k to £7.5k signing on fee they'll be more than happy to discuss your skills and what you could/couldn't do for them. Just start the conversation see where it goes. It maybe they don't have anything now but they do in 6 months or a year and you pair up then. If you need any 1-2-1 advise PM me.

Aspire are expanding aren't they? See they are building on their site at heworth. I drive past it every day.

I'm just coming to end of my first ever IT contract. Was initial six month extended for further three and now perm contract offered. Will be same salary as last IT job without rediculous pressure, travelling and shitty tax code! (No co car)

Win win!

As for job sites reed is canny. Indeed is decent and LinkedIn as already mentioned.
