Benitez Future In Doubt Over Failure to Secure Key Signings

In this market? From our starting point? Not really, no.

But the window isn't shut, should he continue to spend and we bring in the players we need he is backing Benitez.

Its not what you spend its how you spend it. 85m over 2 seasons is more than enough

Your second sentence contradicts your first. It's not what he's spent, it's what he's bought and for what purpose.

He bought an entire 11 to build a side that would get automatically promoted. He did so with the available funds
He now needs to add to that squad with more quality in an inflated market. While looking to offload players who no longer serve a purpose. He's doing that.

If Grayson has anything about him, he'll do similar.

Grayson hasn't got enough to address the 3 glaring holes in the side, never mind a full 11. I also don't think he has any idea who will still be here to choose from for our first game of the season.

That's the main difference imo, Benitez seemingly knew who was going and how much he'd have to get your lot back up.

Yeah it was pretty clear who was going to be out the door. Future of Kone, Khazri and Lens is less clear.

Grayson's buying experience right now, which makes a lot of sense.

That's the difference, you had a very definite plan. Judging by Grayson's comments regarding targets, he's as in the dark as the rest of us, with regards to his side next season.

Surely, surely Short knows that the best way to get back into the top flight is to do so immediately? The longer Norwich (for example) are outside the top flight, the harder it will be for them to return?

You'd think so but, we're 2 weeks away from the season starting, have sold both of our goalkeepers and the bloke who scored 80% of our goals the past couple of years is away. You need a robust squad in the Championship and we're even short in key positions in our first 11, with seemingly more to depart before we think about replacing them.

So you believe a manager should only focus on a team one season at a time?

Thing is of the 50 million spent last season that everyone loves to constantly bring up, Gayle, Ritchie, Clark and Hayden will all be useful squad players going forward (however you might rate them) and thats 30 million of the 50 spent and I would imagine we will recoup at least 10 million of the other 20 before the window shuts.

If anything I think we did fairly decent business last summer, we got promoted as champions and we bought players with premier league experience that will hopefully help contribute to us surviving.

I don't think anyone is saying otherwise. Manquillo, on the other hand...

Two weeks before the season, but ages til the window closes.

If the higher market value players leave, that could mean you sweep up at the end of the window. I think it's going to get crazy as teams panic a bit and those clubs who still have funds could do some business.

You wouldnt make a profit on any of those players and none of them have been useful premier league players in past 3 seasons.

Carry on changing history though

The problem is though, one of our main problems of late has been at starting seasons poorly. It would be nice for a manager to have an idea as to his side in August, for once.

We are experts in spotting a club preparing badly because its happened here last 5 seasons

Not just Nufc but Brighton Stoke Swansea and Burnley all seem to have had a bad summer for me.

£55m over 11 players to go up as Champions. One of the best strikers (Gayle), two of the best midfielders (Ritchie, Shelvey), one of the best defenders (Clark). Plus 7 others. That's good business.

Gayle scored a lot of important goals for Palace, and has a good goals to minutes ratio, just struggled with injuries, Ritchie had a solid season with Bournemouth in the top flight, scored one particular cracker I remember quite well

Why would we want to make a profit when they can do a job for us, this is supposed to be football not the stock market.
All are capable of doing a job for us going forward, and have done well in the premier league before, barring Hayden who is more potential at this point due to his age and a good season behind him.

I completely agree mate. The difference is though, we usually sell a key player on the eve of the season it just after it starts, hoying preparations into even more disarray.

Gayle couldnt start games for a lower prem side vs Wickham and Campbell and was sold as he wasnt good enough.

Ritchie was awful in the premier with Bournemouth. He contributed in just 4 Bournemouth goals for an attacking midfielder thats really poor.

Shelvey has a poor attitude and suffers when he doesnt get ten minutes on the ball.

Hayden we dont know could make step up could look terrible.
