had happened to this wonderful town that used to be so vibrant on a Friday neet out ??
Looking back on the topper Friday nights out mid 90s to mid noughties, Finos , Brogans etc. Great days.
Now ? Fkn hell , it's desperate.

The town is a write off. Been out a few times recently in sunderland, it's just shit and always has been as long as I can remember. From going to ku age 15, I knew then the place was a dive and since then it's gone from bad to worse

The company you're with is the only thing that makes it worth going out. I prefer spending a bit more on a taxi and going to Newcastle personally

I think lasses just give Sunderland a miss entirely as well these days, you're lucky if you see any 7s in Sunderland all night

Everyone looks like they've just got nee money as well it's depressing as fuck

Saturday is marginally better though but nothing to write home about. It's bank holiday next weekend as well and raining so was never looking good for tonight

Sunderland needs more jobs and apartments in the city centre. A lot more student accommodation would help too. Too much has been pushed from the city centre and the evening economy has suffered. Things will naturally improve as the city centre economy becomes more diversified from retail. It's going to have as more people are buying online.

This ,

All this crack that the youngens come out later is a load of shite,it does pick up a little with the younger people later but not much .Its desperate down the town on a night, full of older chav type people and the comment about people looking skint is bang on .

Establishment
Greens
Westminster
Vest villys
Paddy wacks
Basement
Cougar rose
Ttonic
Bavaria
Gatsbys down stairs
Piss heads triangle
Worst of the lot ,f***ing Arizona.

All of the above fall into the scruffy/tragic category,so it's a massive chunk of the town .

Problem I think with Sunderland is its become one big housing estate with not much of any identity/industry/commerce left in it .It shows now in its nightlife .

Hate to slag off my own town ,but the centre is horrific .
Hopefully things are changing with the Vaux site, new bridge,Keel square etc.

Combination of:

No wages rises for nearly 15 year
Cigarette ban
Cheap prices of booze in Supermarkets
Trend of hipster Euro Cafe bars

Mix that together and you have the death of a towns nightlife. Problem with Sunderland is anything new fails then people revert to type like how Josephs is doing well which used to be best bar in town.

If the town was busy with the 30+ crowd then the pubs that are busy now, The Ivy, Chesters, Rosedene, Roker, Buddha etc wouldn't be so it's a double edged sword.

As far as the town is concerned, where caters to the footy fooligan crowd, where caters to younguns into music that puts gigs on every single week or even a few nights a week, where caters to the arty crowd?

You have to know your audience and we cannot compete now that Newcastle has established the scene for all that. You need to build a scene by having somewhere that kids can go to and get used to going to once they get around drinking age.

It's a different world now than it was when everyone just went to the same type of bar and had the same type of night out circa 70/80/90's.
