Weights - how many reps and how many sets?

Reet, those of you who do weights work, how many reps per set do you do and how many sets?

I think I've been overdoing the number of sets.

What are you looking to achieve? Do you devote enough time to rest, recovery and nutrition to sustain the work you do? With what frequency do you do the movement you think you're doing too many sets of and is the intensity consistent?

I'm basically a runner who's switched to weights work whilst awaiting further treatment on and correct diagnosis of a knee injury.

I wouldn't mind a bit extra muscle mass, however, I'm looking more to maintain muscle condition whilst this injury is sorted out.

I know 12 is the maximum number of reps for the above, however, I'm just wondering how many sets of reps people do normally alongside this. Due to recent redundancy, I'm spending more time in the gym than before, whilst I look for a new job. However, I think six sets is a little excessive.

Hmm, it appears to be as I observed on being in the gym. Everone has thier own objectives and therefore own routine.

Don't know whether its the excersises themselves, or the 5x5 routine, but I find this far more "fun" than anything I've done in the gym before.

Not sure I'd call it fun even with quotes but I do like that I can get in, blast through it & get out in under an hour including warmup & shower. No waiting for specific machines being hogged by a bunch of lads who take an hour to get 5 sets each of 1 exercise in.

I really enjoy the squats, deads and bench press.
Not a fan of the barbell row, and I find the overhead press very hard, and it tires me out.

I like the lower number of reps. I always did 10s or 8s previously, and it feels dead "easy" by comparison.

I'm in and out in 45mins. Get a shower when I get home - that way I get to eat dinner with the bairn.
 
It depends what your objectives are - if you're a regular gym attendee & meticulously aiming for strength gain, mass gain, weight loss or definition etc - there'll be programmes which are better suited to it than others.

If you're just starting out then I wouldn't over think the reps & sets, just work with a touching the bar / weights is a positive. You'll figure it out.
