Our squad compares unfavourably with Derby, Leeds & Villa

Can't favour that unfavourably when Bridcutt is one of Leeds best players and they think he's the second coming of Makelele. Likewise McShane and Whitehead are key players in two play off sides.
Newcastle had a defence ripped to shreds in the Premiership, far poorer than our defence now, yet how many 1-0s have they ground out.

The quality is nothing special at all. We just need the right leadership.

Now one thing that really is being underestimated on here is how much of a boost the players will get under a new manager. Imagine an attack minded manager coming into the dressing room after 12 months of total negativity, defensive minded attitudes and defeatism. It will breathe new life back into the squad, I have no doubt about it. It's literally the reason we have kept on surviving in the Premier League! Couple that renewed optimism with a few wins and it soon snowballs.

Problem is though that leadership problem is one we have only solved once in 10 years - and along came England.

Wjy should the mismanagement stop now?

Wolves beat Stoke, Derby beat WBA in the cup.

I don't know the details of the teams those sides put out or am I denying cup upsets happen, but a Hull side in poor form knocked out a side that were full of confidence whose fans fully expected to win the game. Anywaay, as I and many others have pointed out, the current SAFC team has little to do with what starts next season.

How was their defence worse than ours?
They conceded 64, we've conceded 60 so far.
We have Pickford, they were playing Darlow, Elliot and some kid at one stage.
We need to stop kidding ourselves that this squad is better than the mag one that went down.

So at least very similar? Proven by your own statistics there. Yet they've looked like f***ing Juventus in the championship mate  Even when playing terrible they've not found it too difficult to shut out teams. Lascelles team of the year man, so there is hope for papy yet.

Don't like to name names anad can't be bothered to trawl back - but there is a certain concensus of opinion about how shite the Championship is & when we (by some miracle) appoint the right manager the water will turn to wine and lo & behold will ascend to the premiership heaven accompanied to the archangels singing "Wise men say".

It is not impossible - but getting the manager right is the sino qua non and the most difficult for us.

Would have thought Norwich's and Villa's respective seasons show that it won't be a cake walk. Norwich kept the majority of their PL squad and many tipped them as favourites. And look at the squad Villa have assembled and they've struggled.

I totally disagree with you.

Mick McCarthy walked it twice.

A large proportion of this squad have been shite under a succession of different managers. Big Sam got a tune out of them for about 6 weeks.

The problem is a lot of the players we will have left are injury prone. Gibson, Cattermole, Rodwell, Jones, Oviedo. Then we have others like Love who aren't particularly good. Defoe has carried us for two years and we'll inevitably lose him. People are saying summer rebuild will be massive but they haven't got it right the last 10 years so who's to say we'll get it right now?

We should keep as many as we can, I agree. Their replacements are more than likely to be even worse. Ideally we'll hold onto a core of a squad, it'll make life a hell of a lot easier.
I don't see why we should keep many that have proven they aren't good enough for 90% of the season every season since they've been here.

I think many people are in for a surprise if they think players like Larsson and Billy Jones will look class in the Championship because they won't.
