Local item about some dear old chap in Gosforth (along with many others) getting the chop due to gov't funding.

Lot's of well-heeled parents kicking off of course.

Do we actually need them or is it just a tradition that people like and dont want to give up?

Needed I would say
Have you seen the state of today's youth trying to cross the road?

Yes despite teaching road safety in school from a young age we all have been guilty of being a bit silly when crossing a road, part of growing up.

However is a man/woman holding people's hands so to speak really still required when crossings do just the same job?

Needed. Too many idiots driving too fast and it's not safe for children to cross the road.

Where I live, it's a 40mph road that drops to 30mph a few metres before the school entrance. There are parked cars on the side of the road blocking the view, so children are at risk of people who haven't slowed down and can't see properly because of the parked cars. The lollipop man has nearly been hit several times.

Valid points but also in the roads close to lots of schools it's parental parking (blocking views) that is just as dangerous.

Certainly seems like most councils are getting rid

Depends where. Not needed outside the school at St Anne's.
You've got lights, then a lollipop lass, then a zebra crossing on one small stretch.
Creates needless queuing in both directions.

Oh I agree with parking. There was yet another note on the school newsletter last week reminding people not to park on the zig zags and that the school drive shouldn't be used for dropping off or turning cars round in.

Definitely speeding round here as I think the 40mph around the perimeter of my estate is ridiculous. It's got bends and hills and there have been near misses as people go slower to turn in/out of streets.

Also the main road through the middle of the village is bad. The pedestrian crossing is towards the other end of the village away from the schools which makes no sense! The traffic has increased considerably since they put the 20mph restriction on Durham Road in Birtley, as loads nip through our village to avoid it. We've also go a lot more lorries coming through for the Drum Industrial Estate as the railway bridge is closed for repairs. Apparently it's really difficult to cross the road safely since the lollipop lady left. She hasn't been replaced as it's been advertised but nobody has applied for the job.

Definitely needed, we live across the road from my bairns school, it's a very busy A road and some days he can be standing there 5-10 minutes waiting for a gap. There's a lollipop lady for the primary school at the other end of the village but that's it for crossings. Apparently Durham CC thinks the roads not busy enough for one  baring in mind the majority of the houses are on the other side to the shops I'd say it's very necessary

Certainly needed for primary schools. Seconary may depend on the school but preferable.

As an aside, I may be extremely naive, but I always thought that they were community spirited pensioners volunteering their services :oops:

I noticed that the council or whoever said that they'll train people up if they want to volunteer and do it for nowt. I wonder how many other people's jobs they'd be happy to do that for? Bastards.
