Homebrewing - Part 3

Going to dust off the grainfather next week, so it's weird this thread popped up on the front page again.

Nee idea, what I'm going to do yet but it's been over a year since I last did owt. Fancy building up some supplies for the summer.

i've been getting quite merry watching the six nations tournament drinking what i had left over from last years brew.
going to start another batch in a couple of weeks. i'm no expert, just use the wilkinsons kits but it's nice enough for me.
i envy the set up some of you lot have :)
You will struggle to do better than Woodfordes Wherry from wilkies.

I had a brewday on Saturday which was a complete disaster by all accounts, so guaranteed to be the best beer I've made!

Not long after I got the mash on my son took unwell and ended up at out of hours (tonsillitis) so my mash was on for 2 and a half hours.

Then it took forever to come up to the boil so I was in the process of putting the kids to bed when it was time to put in my 15 minute addition.

Then, in my wisdom, I decided to put the rest of the maple syrup from pancake day in (about 120ml). I hadn't realised at the time but it contains caramel colouring (no preservatives though, phew), so my IPA is the colour of a brown ale.

Finally, I took my gravity reading: 1.076! My target was 1.060 (even after accounting for the syrup) so I achieved 81% efficiency instead of my usual 65%. I added some water to bring it down to 1.062 and then it occurred to me that this will have watered down the IBUs!

Only time will tell whether this is a success. Hopefully no cock ups in dry hopping or bottling.

My milk stout brew day was effortless for once. From heating the strike water to putting the FV in the fridge was about 5 hours.

Did anyone ever build a kegerator?

Hate bottling, the worst part of brewing. So fancy getting a build on the go, just convinced our lass it'd be a good idea to have one in the corner of the living room.

I thought about it but changed my mind. I decided to just use half mini kegs half bottles for each brew. I'll probably look at Cornu kegs again at some point tho.

I've got a keezer.

It's got a 3rd tap now and the collar has been sprayed black. Need to spray the rest of it copper. Also need to get some temperature control sorted for the summer.

I'm just a little bit jealous. We've no room in the house for one at the moment. We plan to put an extension on in 2019 or 2020 once my youngest is at school and room for 2 undercounted fridges is part of my requirements for the utility room!

We're looking to move house in the next few months - I'm hoping to grab half the garage as my new brewhouse. I'll have running water and lecky. Which will be a massive bonus!

My next big project will be to do some sort of outside bar where I can serve draught from when we have BBQ's. Doesn't need to be very big or flash, might even make it mobile. That's the rest of my afternoon spent looking for plans!

Stick some caster wheels on a fridge!

Cornies are the way forward like. Don't quite hold a 5 gallon batch, but I don't mind bottling the few pints excess.

They're kept in the garage, and it's cool enough all year round for drink.

Just went old school with 4 Young's bitter kits. 2 batches of 40 pints using 2 cans in each, no sugar. Going to add a hop tea when bottling, fuggles in one, Styrian goldings in the other. 80 pints for 5p each, can't go wrong.
