Would they necessarily need it? A good team spirit and coherent game plan can go a long way even with a team full of unfancied players. There are a load of teams who have come up from the Championship and held their own without massive investment - the Mags themselves even did it with a lot of the squad that got them relegated last time round.
 
Newcastle are a decent side but christ almighty the majority of teams in this league are shite.

If we go down, we should come back up no bother.

Defoe would get 30 in that league.
