Lysine and Cold Sores

Anyone used this to help get them under control? I've had three on the bounce and I'm f***ing sick to death of them, becoming the bane of my life. Any other old wives' tales also appreciated. Sick of the fuckers.

I used to get them really bad as a young'un. Tried lysine tablets, Zovirax and all the creams under the sun and it never worked...

Now if I feel one coming on (rarely, touch wood) then I blitz it straight away with an infrared doodah I bought from amazon; coupled with sticking Compeed cold sore patches on. They are immense, put it on tight enough and it keeps the swelling down and doesn't give it time to scab.

Cold sores are horrific man, but doing the above is the least painless and unsightly way I've found to manage them.

I just use generic Zovirax. It's only a quid a tube. I have one in my laptop bag, desk, coat pocket, etc. slightest tingle and I'm onto it. I still get the odd one but avoid quite a few.

I use Blistex once it's inactive and the thing is usually gone within a week.

I buy 400mg Aciclovir tablets on line. Take 5 a day for 5 days to almost guarantee 3 to 6 months without one. Or as I tend to do now just take one as soon as you feel the first tingle.

In the States I was prescribed tablets for herpes. Can't for e life of me remember what they were called. If you have normal herpes you take one a day but for cold sores, I took one as soon as I felt it in the morning, then one on the afternoon and they never came back. Can't get the doctors to prescribe it over here though.

I've started using the Boots electronic device thing, and that seems to work well.

Edit: they were called Valtrex. Slightly different from acyclovir.

An ex army medic first gave me them offshore. He reckoned they had never returned with some after doing the 5 a day for 5 days treatment. I usually get about 6 months clear but forget to repeat it until one springs up again. I carry them all the time now as they are the only thing I have known that stops them in their tracks and I must have tried the lot.

The electronic devices do work but not as well

When I used to get the odd one I used a balm called Snowfire, you can order it online or buy it from Boots. It's a green stick and smells quite strong but it works.

It takes away the urge to touch them and you forget they're there. Plus it stops them flaring up if you catch it early.

I never get any now so not sure if it's a cure as well as a balm.

I've had a couple start to come so I put that green stuff on that a lot of Vietnamese use for everything from a cold to a heart attack. Seems to do the trick and stop them coming.

The Snowfire I mentioned is green and one of its core ingredients is Petroleum.

Valaciclovir

I get cold sores with frequency which is quite troublesome so like @Spenny I buy aciclovir online.

Works out at about £14 a month I think.

I don't think there's any antiviral action to Snowfire (I would hazard a guess there is isn't) but if it works it works!

You might want to get your immune system under control mate. I got one off some dirty bewer years ago, and every time I'm run down I get one.

Something like 80% of adults have oral HSV-1 mind. It's incredibly prevalent because it's a very sneaky bastard and never ever goes away.

Even when you have no active cold sore you can still be shedding the virus and pass it on.

How would I do that? Im under no stress right now, eating healthy, working out regularly. Getting them now really baffles me...

HONEY, its magic, got to be the raw honey from amazon, amazing for skin

A research study by Al-Waili (2004) [page references] tested the application of honey to fever blisters, as opposed to acyclovir cream (a prescription antiviral medication).

The study's findings were that the honey treatment performed better. Specifically: "The mean duration of attacks and pain, occurrence of crusting, and mean healing time with honey treatment were 35%, 39%, 28% and 43% better" than when the prescription item was used.

I agree but it definitely deals with the symptoms.
