Davey Dowell

I shared so many good times with this wonderful man. A room in Accrington after a Burnley away game. A car crash on the way home on the same weekend (everyone escaped uninjured but don't think he went to another away game by car after that!). We ran away from angry Wolves supporters after we beat them at Molineux midweek. He paid for my ticket to get to Tranmere away last game of the season when we had won the league and I was skint! There are so many more memories I could write about but you get the gist. I don't think there are enough words to explain how everyone who knew him are feeling right at this moment. All we can do is remember the good times. RIP Davey Dowell, the Ledge and a true gentleman xxx

There was the other story I heard about how he was so desperate to beat the derby day away fans ban at Sid james park that he applied for, and was given, a press or photographer's accreditation, for some apocryphal 'new' publication (can anyone remember the daft name he dreamt up?). Only thing was, his cover was nearly blown in the pre match kick about when one of the players spotted him behind the goal and called out "how man Didge, how yer doing?".

I think there may well be something in the first programme of the season - which, ironically Davey would probably have hated!

Without a doubt this will happen.

I spoke to the programme editor, Rob Mason, yesterday and he had some very kind words to say about Davey.

I remember being told this story numerous of times, he was right behind the Sunderland bench and a few Sunderland players recognised him and spoke to him, the Mags weren't happy at all

Didn't know the lad but from the comments on here he seemed to be a very well known and well loved bloke.

It's obviously hit people hard and reminds me on here of the time when Podge died.

RIP Davey, sincerest condolences to his family and what seems like a (red and white) army of friends - I'll be raising a glass for you tonight.

This sums up my thoughts perfectly. RIP.

If it's inappropriate to ask shoot me down, but what happened?

Does anyone have more information?

The Police are still investigating his death, so until all the facts are known it's probably best not to post the current known details on this forum. His brother will be reading this thread, so it's best to remain one for condolences and stories about Davey's cricketing and football stories. Thanks.

Thanks marra, I'd no idea that the police were involved and there was certainly no intention of showing any form of disrespect.

That was me that did the press pass!

Davey got a ticket off somebody he knew (not sure who it was).

I seen Davey just outside the ground on my way up there, walked up behind him and said David Dowell. He completely froze then turned round slowly to see it was me and I genuinely thought he was going to swing for me!!

He went in the ground quite early and the team were on the pitch warming up and it was Bally that gave the game away as Daveys ticket was near the tunnel! Came off after warming up, seen Davey and shouted and waved over!

Sad story, though don't know the bloke. But he looks just like a fella who sits just half a doz seats from me.

As he is known in Hong Kong

Just found out about this C, absolutely gutted. Davey was the definition of the ultimate supporter and by that I don't mean some kind of uber-fan going around boasting about how many grounds he visited or how many miles he travelled. He was completely oblivious to all that. Quite simply he loved and supported the Lads through thick and thin without reservation. I bumped into him on Holmeside the last time I was back home. We had not seen each other for 2-3 years but we picked up the craic immediately discussing the Lads, of course. Must have been there an hour just craicing on, almost forget that I had to get to the Post Office before it closed. Ended up having to leg it down Fawcett Street. Davey had that effect.

You mention the Hong Kong 'steak and chips' incident but my favourite memory of Davey was when I was playing cricket for the London branch against the mags. Davey was down for the weekend and got drafted into the team. I was at the non-strikers end when he came out to bat and in those days he had very long hair kept in place with a headband. He looked like a mini heavy metal McEnroe. The mags were pissing themselves as he came out to bat but about an hour later after he had scudded them to all corners the comments had well and truly dried up. Can't remember how many he got but it was a lot but the thing is he ended up giving his wicket away because he felt sorry for them!! Sort of sums up the humanity of the lad. Great bloke. RIP
Him playing against the Skunks. The most regularly recalled London Branch cricket match. Another one of those larger than life moments.

Yes thats the lad. Actually had a bit of interaction with him about 8/10 years back at a derby game, when we scored and he nearly knocked me over the seats in front.
Sad story non the less.

Couldnt agree more. This is definitely NOT the place to discuss the hows, whys and wherefores.

There was great tale of when he was at some outdoor do (possibly to do with cricket) which had a marquee.
Dave had one too many, climbed up the main guy rope and slid down on his butt a whoopin and a hollerin:lol:.
My memory isnt what it used to be, but I am sure it was Dave involved. Perhaps Taff/Mike will confirm.

I once asked him what his 'I was there' moment was as a Sunderland supporter, he said being at that mags match when the away fans were banned was it.

52 is no age to go. I didn't know him but the stories on here make him larger than life. RIP and hopefully his family can take a tiny bit of comfort that he seemed to have a great life.
