Obama: It's in the interest of the United States that Britain remains in the EU

Good job they stuck their noses into two world wars and the Cold War.

This.
I also love how many of you are flying over the issue that the bloke is head of a country of STATES and has to keep them all United as best he can on laws which effect billions of people.
I'd rather have America as a friend, than a casual acquaintance.

If we weren't separated from Europe by 24 miles of water, things would be difference.

Some of you seem to think we're this massive country which could take on the world if we wanted to.
We can't. We're as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.

I understand it is perfectly commonplace for political parties in the US to wheel out celebrity endorsements. Maybe our PM should dodge over and do a bit of campaigning on behalf of the party that he thinks will be better for Britain. Trump & Cruz are mental and will cause problems around the world - should our PM go over and advise the American public not to vote for them?
i seem to recall the John Major government digging up dirt on Clinton from his time as a rhodes scholder to help out Bush41's re-election...

 no we don't FFS  but we are capable of standing on our own two feet.... for such a tiny country....

Who is on about taking on the world? How about working with and embracing the world? There's absolutely no suggestion that the point of a Brexit is isolation.

Why should they? They are commenting on what they believe is best for them not for us. It's up to us to make the decision for what is best for us. But they have every right to comment.
They should take it somewhere else then....we don't care about their interests

pulling the draw bridge up, becoming once again its own island off the coast of continental europe without any union with the nearest nations whom have influenced us most over the last 100 years will not increase our influence on the rest of the globe! we've boxed above our weight for many years now, this will see us boxing at a proper weight well away from the heavy-weights.

they have so much influences over the mother country we should pay attention to their interests...

Pulling up the draw bridge? We're putting it down for the rest of the world, man. Trade does not depend on political union. We have the 5th largest economy in the world. Britain is a heavyweight, without a doubt. It makes me said that people think it's trendy to put Britain down.

its not putting britain down, its pointing out that currently we dine at the top table even after 70 years of decline in influence. to isolate ourselves further will not improve our lot in the world...

take the iran nuclear talks, the main parties were the US & the EU, we got into the party thanks to being a member of the EU so that the foreign sec could party with the big boys.

He should come back once the US has entered a political union with the Americas, sharing sovereignty with Honduras and Ecuador, allowing Columbia to help implement laws that override the US constitution, and opens the Mexican border.

This tbf.

I presume the Brexiters will be equally scathing of Marine Le Pen's forthcoming intervention.

I am, I already created a thread outlining my clear disapproval of it.

Of course, what she says not as relevant as the most powerful man in the world is it?

Perhaps people should actually read his opinion on the matter: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...e-tell-you-that-the-eu-makes-britain-even-gr/. I don't really see the problem in him giving an international perspective on what it's like to relate with the UK as part of the EU while unambiguously noting that this is a matter for British voters. He conveniently doesn't address the problems that most of the Brexit campaigners cite, I'd imagine in part for two reasons: he doesn't care about them and they're none of his business anyway, just as U.S. immigration policy is not really the EU's business. So yeah, his argument misses the point for many and isn't likely to be very persuasive, but I don't really see the issue with him expressing an opinion that so clearly misses many of the core issues.
He should keep is f***ing nose out of it. I'm sure the American people would love it if our Queen came over there and started telling them what they should or shouldn't do... NOT!!!

Not literally the Queen, but foreign leaders opining on U.S. policy choices, even when they're visiting Washington, is quite common.

There's no isolation.

Britain is a member of the G8, NATO, Commonwealth, is a permanent member of the Security Council, the OSCE and the Council of Europe.

He does of course have a right to comment, and we have a right to call him an interfering hypocrite, which he undoubtedly is.

His comments would carry more weight if he wasn't in charge of a country which is one of the most insular and protectionist in the western world.

Anyone who listens to Obama on this subject and thinks he's addressing anything other than US self interest is delusional.
