I have read their detailed statement and fully believe every word.
As an employer they acted with the professionalism I would expect.
I'd rather believe my club than the rubbish invented by the papers, groups of fans unfurling banners or a convicted proven liar.

Well done SAFC.

Sunderland til I die.
Or you could chose to believe the person who lied in court

You refused to share a live link to one of our games with your fellow fans on here so who really gives a fuck what you think, pal?
f***ing absolutely **** man, you can't just call someone guilty because someone said something happened. Fuck sake man.

No fans did anything wrong supporting him, he lied to the club and fans and police and therefor my conscience is completely clear. It's his that should be guilty.

He's being made an example of mate. Hopefully this will serve as a lesson and a warning to all professional footballers that in spite of all the money and privilege they are not above the law, as somany of them seem to believe themselves to be.

Not sure I like this to be honest - all people should be equal before the law - there are very serious serial child abusers involved in cases like the Rochdale one that received less than 10 years:

Kabeer Hassan was sentenced to nine years for rape and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with children. Abdul Aziz received a similar sentence years for trafficking for sexual exploitation and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with children. Abdul Rauf was sentenced to six years for trafficking for sexual exploitation and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with children. Adil Khan was sentenced to eight years for the same offences. Mohammed Amin received a five year sentence for sexual assault and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with children. Another five year sentence was given to Abdul Qayyum for conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with children while Hamid Safi received four years for trafficking for sexual exploitation and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with children.

To be honest I would normally have expected the tariff to be 1-3 years (often suspended) for a 27 years old who gets a snog and a quick grope in a car through clothes of a girl who is less than a year under age and who wasn't coerced - although the massive number of grooming texts, his late guilty pleas and his attitude in court won't have helped.

only thing I wish was clarified was whether they knew he had kissed and texted the lass.

They have confirmed they knew nowt about his pleas but haven't confirmed whether they knew about the other (as was said in court they did)

(for the record I don't believe for 1 minute that they knew)

Surely if the club knew even the basic facts when he was charged, that she was 15, season ticket holder and first met at the match they should have made the responsible decision not to play him and keep him away from the sol on match days.

The fact we now hear Byrne had transcripts of police interviews admitting kissing etc makes the whole thing more disgusting. She must surely go.

Is it a fact?

The CEO was present in the interview and saw the documents relating to the case ie the WhatsApp messages (according to what was revealed in court, which the club haven't denied in the statement) .

From what was revealed in those messages it was pretty clear he'd be guilty. If I was a SAFC fan I'd be sickened if she didn't sack him after seeing those.

Stop talking sense. I want to be outraged.

Why are the PFA not getting the same treatment as the club from the people who are still trying to defend a convicted sex offender?

Well, playing devil's advocate for a moment - it's because the PFA's raison d'etre is to look after the interests of their members, and that what they were doing (believing him to be innocent at the time).
Sunderland FC however, coul
I think the Club have a responsibility to the community and to the supporters. On that basis, I expect that the very well paid people who are employed to run the Club, will run the Club in a manner commensurate with those responsibilities. I would love to think that this has been the case here - but I am more than a bit alarmed that some (in my eyes, pretty serious) issues that were raised about the Club in the trial have been skirted over in that statement. The natural reaction is to assume that the Club cannot refute the allegations made. After all, if they could, why wouldn't they?

A lot of legal team will advise you not to start getting into 'he said, we said' type statements. If you're innocent, there should be no need to address specific allegations of others. Why give it any credence?
It's a tough one when someone's made a specific allegation against you, but it's an easy trap to fall into too, and before you know it, you're fending off countless questions about ever more specific things.

So, we are told by the barrister that the club were presented with the entire text transcript last May .
I bet the club didn't even properly examine the text evidence ,( if they did they acted very badly), if they didn't they failed to take the issues seriously enough. Either way they are damned and their behaviour towards the girl is inexcusable .
Not to mention the spectators.

my thoughts exactly - ridiculous no wonder our prisons are full when you can even get 18 months for typing a few nasty words. He deserves time - but 5-10 years!
He grommed her
He used his position as a footballer
He lied
He had sexual activity with a 15 year old girl
I'd lock him up and throw away the key the dirty bastard.
