Its still years since they won anything, they are a smallclub like us in terms of they have won nothing in recent history. If people judge it off support then they are a small club compared to us

I'm sorry mate, but that is just codswallop. Are we only classing recent history as the last decade now?
It's a non argument, they have won much, much more than us in the last 40 odd years - they are miles ahead of us in that respect.

They haven't won out for about 20 yrs, therefore there not really a big club anymore. We won loads in the 1930's but i wouldn't say that makes us a big club now. History is history

Ok mate.

History makes a club what it is today, and villa also have much more recent history of winning multiple trophies than we do.

True but counts for nothing. They have won nothing with any involvement from any one still on the club's playing staff.

A pointless argument mind. The so called big clubs as we like to refer to them are just that. City, UTD, Chelski, Arsenal, Liverpool and possibly Spurs.

No on else can now enter their club, the new regs gave seen to that.

For a long time through the sixties and seventies if any one mentioned " the big five" regarding football you knew what they meant and why they meant it. That big five / six was much the same. Everton being nudged out for City.

History doesn't make a club what it is 2day in my opinion, otherwise villa wont be rock bottom, teams like Leeds wouldn't be in championship

Aston Villa, beyond the "won Europe" argument:
"They have the fifth highest total of major honours won by an English club, having won the First Division Championship seven times, the seven times, the five times. The club have also produced a record 73 national team players, equaled only by ."

Cant't get my head around them going down to the Championship.

It comes down to Lerner and the men he picks to lead the club.
Its an impressive trophy haul mate and the england player stat was one i wasnt aware of. Villa fans should be righly proud of all that. However, in the cold harsh commercial world of the premier league it all comes down to cash and revenues and trophies won now. Past glories increadingly mean less and less when it comes to measuring the size of a club.

Liverpool fans wished Leicester well and hoped they would win the league or get CL providing it wasn't at their expense, they didn't see Leicester as a long term threat to them because they're a big club.

Everton were bitter and resentful of Leicester's season because they're not a big club and feared being overtaken by Leicester.

In my experience teams that are self proclaimed "big clubs" and are obsessed about the size of a club are not big clubs. Proper big clubs never have this conversation.

Pussies!

It may not have a bearing on current results, but it certainly makes a club what it is today. Using your logic, Bournemouth are a bigger club than villa.

I think Villa are bigger, they have won a european trophy...................................but dismal support like M'lord ;)
On that logical argument Nots Forrest are a bigger club than the both of us as they have won the e cup twice..........I hate this type of argument as it makes look like the scum up the road! Sunderland were the most sucsessful club in history until 1950 since then we have been shite but you can never take that achievement away from us just like you cannot take away a villas e cup win .. in reality a villa and sunderland are simular sized clubs but a vill have been slightly more sucessful but safc have a more loyal support.....it matters nothing though we are both shite now and very much not big clubs in this modern football world ..it does rile though when the the likes of west brom west ham stoke swansea leicester and the like see themselves as bigger clubs than sunderland when in the 125 year history of the game they have not won the league title once!

Generally agree, history is something to be proud of, not much use on the pitch on match day. But history can be an asset for attracting an owner with deeper and more willing pockets than Lerner.

Big club is difficult to quantify .......like everything it comes down to money verses some non quantifiable idea that supporters have about clubs positions in the hierarchy .........if some multi billionare came in and bought out bournemouth and bought 30 of the best players in the world(bugger FFP)and they won the league twice and then the european cup..............they would now be a big club ? yes or no?...............chelsea and man city are mega clubs financially but have a long way to catch the succsess of man u or liverpool and before the billoinares took over they were mid range clubs at best!

I don't mean literally now, but villa have done nothing for 20 years, so cant be called a big club. Leeds have a great history do you still class them as a big club

So why are we even in this big club argument then?

Villa have challenged for the league in the last twenty years, won it in the last 35, won the European Cup etc. They even won the League Cup twice in the 90s. All this in living memory for many.

Up to about 1980 our history was similar to theirs, them being one of the major clubs with ourselves, Everton and Arsenal in the early days. Since 1980 they overtook our history by some distance.

True we have bigger attendances in general, but they've had better players often competed in European competitions and in terms of the league we've finished top ten on three occasions since the 50s, they've done more than that in the last ten years. Even suggesting we're on the same level makes us look silly, because it always comes back to attendances.

History is history now is now.

totally agree. All you can say about these clubs is they are clubs steeped in history.

Oh great, this shite again.

f***ing tedious. I know that's what it's like reading my posts on here.
