love this :D

OP must be thinking 'fuck you' with a face smugger than that Mark Francis **** from Made In Chelsea

Decent signing like lads, getting shot of Altidore at the same time, f***ing Christmas again isn't it

He also missed nearly half of the season in the MLS because of injury. Lets hope his age hasn't made him prone to injury.

Just looked up his stats there.

He's a very streaky player - gets the headlines with good runs of games, but usually ends the season on 10-13 goals.

He scored a goal in England every 2.8 games (including his time at Bournemouth). Not bad, but we're going to need him fit every game and scoring from the off if he's going to justify that ridiculous contract.

Defoe could work, but only with 2-3 other signings allowing Poyet to change style of play

At the moment he'd be totally isolated

Whilst I have reservations about how he'll fit into our system, I agree that our lack of chances is a combination of poor midfield and awful movement from strikers. A little better movement would go a long way to getting us a few more goals, even without a midfield improvement.

Didn't think about that, made me feeling even better about this deal.

As I said on here regardless of the 'feel good' of such a signing we will always get the likes of you or Lord Alfred to drag up stats that prove that we are idiots to be pleased with a signing. As usual I try to be optimistic.

The truth is you just don't like anyone to air views which don't concur with your own. Why is it wrong that some people on here have had a look at his recent PL track record (compared to Fletchers it's worse) and conclude that £12m on a 32 year old may not be a prudent use of funds.......and criticism from you, who constantly berates others for not facing up to the club's financial reality is rich indeed.

I love the SMB me. You can just imagine if someone like Leicester were signing him.

SPEND SOME MONEY ELLIS1!!!!! I WANT TO GET ANGRY

Surely the point is whether or not that's the best way to spend money?

If we suddenly have £80pw to throw around, I'd hope that our highly-connected sporting director would have a list of names to start contacting, and I'd hope that Defoe would not be at the top of it.

Wages only isn't it? And it's the average wage at a lot of clubs anyway.

If he scores goals - even just 7or 8 it might be enough to guarantee Premiership football. The question I can he in this team as it would take a change in style of play.

Don't agree, we are underachieving, when everyone is fit we have a half decent team, maybe we wouldn't have that much more points but you have to try and win games at home, season ticket holders are the life blood of the club and there absolutely no excuse IMO for the current tactics at home
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, I acknowledge we are quite a defensive team, but I just don't think it's completely because of tactics like some others think, but there you go.
As I side note, I am a season ticket holder too, so don't make the mistake of thinking it's not frustrating me just as much

While this is true I always saw him as being flat track bully. Scores only against the poorer teams. Which is what we need atm. Scoring only against the lower half teams would hopefully get us more wins

hmmm I dont know what to think about this one. Firstly its great to actually be spending money again, it shows that Short trusts Gus and belives in him to do well. Its great to get rid of Jozy (as harsh as it sounds) and Defoe was great a few years ago.

However, as Jonathon Wilson points out he firstly doesnt fit the system we play, its a ton of money and Defoe is clearly on a downward spiral as a footballer.

Hopefully we can make sure we sort out our supply from the midfield, palying Giac in the middle prehaps? or changing the system to a diamond or even 4-2-3-1 to allow us to get the ball to him.... heck even two up front with fletcher and defoe sounds great.

Anyway blind faith will always carry such deals among fans so lets hope he is the new Darren Bent or Super Kev :D Anyone know if he is avalible for Spurs?? I know he hasnt had pre-season training yet in Toronto so might not be fit enough

@GraemeBailey: Sunderland are confident that they are to conclude a deal for Jermain Defoe. Will be a huge boost for Gus Poyet.
