Defoe

@DavidJonesSky: Told the Defoe deal to Sunderland is done. Surprised by the numbers involved. Seems quite a change in policy.

He was probably around a 1 in 3 striker for a good Spurs side so he'll bang then in for fun with the service he'll get off our midfield
Dear me, there are some seriously depressed people on here. To my mind we need a boost and Defoe would give us this. He would make things happen - however, I know the likes of you and Lord Alfred have all the statistics to burst my bubble.

Do cup goals not count like? It doesn't take stats to show that Defoe is a better option. Fletcher has scored in 2 games in the past year.

Seeing as we haven't played European football since Noah was constructing his Ark I think a PL comparison is reasonable.......

On talksport chat now with Graham Courtney.

Will be play left wing or on his ownsome up front without a player within 30 yards lol.

But at least its some good news. Some concerns over his recent injury record.

This is my concern, we need a tactical rethink or it really is a waste of time.

You think signing Defoe will make everything fine ? Hopefully this is just the start in this window

I think people are making too much of the number of chances we would create. Defoe will create openings for our midfield to play in by his movement. The midfield take a lot of grief , but creating chances isn't just about the midfield getting it in there, its about forwards getting into meaningful space rather than just standing there marked

I'm not going to pretend none of the depth is intentional; it's true, we play a defensive system, but if you watch Gus on the sidelines he's screaming at the team to move up incessantly. I know other CB pairings in the league are slow, but I genuinely believe JOS & Wes hold back at least 5 yards behind where they should because of their pace, and they still get turned constantly. Just look at the penalty decision against Liverpool. They tried to play a normal line and got torn apart.

I'm not saying it's the whole reason, but it certainly contributes.

Another reason is the speed of our fullbacks. Vergini is so slow that Johnson has to drop back down the pitch to cover for him, so that's another behind the ball. Gomez doesn't push up as high as he should or as quickly, so that's another one, and when Rev was playing instead of PVA, Wickham was constantly dropping back too.

Yes we do hold to many people back, but as I say, I don't believe it's the system. It's the players that are the problem. We need more talent, we need more pace, and we need more time to coach the finer points of Gus' style.

The people who say that we play negative defensive crap every game don't understand what Gus is trying to achieve. Whether or not he is succeeding in this currently is another matter.

Don't agree, we are underachieving, when everyone is fit we have a half decent team, maybe we wouldn't have that much more points but you have to try and win games at home, season ticket holders are the life blood of the club and there absolutely no excuse IMO for the current tactics at home
