Phil Hughes fighting for his life

It actually looks like it hits him on the back of the head- he turns away from the ball.

I must be naive- but I always thought that as long as the ball hit the main helmet you'd be safe. I suppose a 90 mph ball could create such force to damage the skull through the helmet.

The helmet was raised at the back to allow more head movement. It appears to have caught him just underneath.

Hit him in the neck/base of skull according to reports here. Just when he was close to being selected in the test squad.
Thoughts with him and his family

Yeah, the footage I saw earlier was an Australian news broadcast showing a low quality stream. Looks similar to Justin langer's hit against sa in his 100th test match if anyone remembers. That did hit his helmet but he spent a night in hospital with bad concussion. Seen footage of Lee hitting chanderpaul there and he was unconscious before he hit the ground. Wonder if that area behind the ear should have more protection, specifically on one side for a left/right handed batsman.

Terrible that. Surely time to no ball anything over chest height - are bouncers any more sporting than leg theory? The aim is to force a wrong shot defending your head.

Hang on a sec. This is a horrific accident and I hope he recovers, but lets not overreact. We would have a pretty drab sport full of big blokes sitting waiting on the front for if we outlawed the bouncer.

I agree we can maybe look at helmet design, but cricket is dangerous, we all know it when we get into it, and naturally there will be the odd instance where a nasty injury occurs.

Horrendous

As I posted previously, I took one in the face this summer (top edge) and nearly lost an eye. Have taken to wearing a helmet and now believe everyone should

Hope he pulls through

Hope the guy who bowled the delivery is arrested, could potentially be facing a murder charge.

A bouncer is a delivery designed to hit a batsman around the chest and head, Its dangerous, violent and should be banned.

Thoughts are with Phil Hughes, poor bastard.

A sliding tackle is designed to kick a football but sometimes it's dangerous and violent. Should that be banned too. It's shocking news but I think you're over-reacting a bit.

In a sliding tackle, you're aiming at winning the ball. A bouncer is designed to hit a batmans man in the face/chest.

If a player aimed a sliding tackle at an opponents face im sure he would be arrested for assault.

Im sorry but this is nonsense and Im fairly sure Phil Hughes would agree.

Its tragic and a horrible incident but the lad bowling has bowled a legitimiate delivery that is part and parcel of the game at the top level.

Phil Hughes will spend hours and hours in the nets facing up to this type of delivery against his own team mates and bowling machines.

Demanding a prosecution in this case is akin to demanding a prosecutoon of a dangerous tight corner in Formula 1. Its there deliberately, it is a challenge that has been laid down to the driver (cricketer in this case) and they have accepted the challenge.

I hope Phil Hughes makes a full recovery and I also hope that the bowler is given the support he needs as well

Not trolling, the Bouncer should be banned.

well that's certainly an argument that can be put forward for debate. Saying that the bowler in this incident should be arrested and facing a potential murder charge is ludicrous though. The bouncer currently isn't banned, its a legal delivery, one that is used in every form of the game, professional and amateur, every day of the year. Its practiced by bowlers and defence and attack of it is practiced by batsmen.

Unfortunately in this circumstance the protective equipment that is normally very reliable hasn't protected the batsman. Alternative designs and improved materials should be considered to try and prevent anything like this happening again in future.

Its just a tragic accident in a sport where everyone is aware of the dangers.

Murder comment is ridiculous but totally agree about the bouncer. Let's face it, it's intimidatory bowling and should already be banned under existing intimidatory bowling rules. No different to a beamer or bodyline IMHO.

Already been heavily restricted with no detriment to the game. Would anyone miss it?

This isn't knee jerk, I have held this opinion since watching the Windies bowl six an over in the 1970s
