North east cricket legends past or present

made an absolute mug of me. Think I registered a 9 or 10 ball duck opening up iirc. On the spot, swinging in and away. Bowled a few away swingers, which I left or played and missed then set me up with an in swinger. Played a cover drive and straight through the gate.

He didnt even react when me stumps rattled. Meat and drink for him
Well that puts you in the same league as Ritchie Richardson ,WIndies capt. at the time, as I watched him do exactly the same to him one evening at Bournmoor.

Who were the main men for Durham in the 80's when they were still a minor county side?
Greensword - obviously. Amazing bowling figures

Davis was an Aussie pro playing in the leagues, but I think he rarely played for Durham.

Still Greensword ..... and a few more names you might remember

a few of them Burnmoor 'amateurs' !

I think Patel may have been the old PE teacher from Shotton Hall school iirc

Glendening was pro at Easington for a while to iirc again

Interesting read

Ashok was a geography teacher.

The two Keith's of the 80s and 90s were Chapman and Trotter. Both brilliant club cricketers. Trotter went onto play first class as Durham broke through.

good shout, bloke was a machine
Played for Felling? Left arm bowler? Who was his partner in crime? Was it Parnaby? Still got a mashed up little toe from some of the yorkers I had to dig out. Should have used my bat really.

What about that dull wicky they had who adorned his bedroom walls with photos of tavare and boycott?
Always felt his brother was better value personally! ;)
Ha ha class that. My claim to fame (or should it be infamy) is that I persuaded the above mentioned 'dull wicky' to come back to Murton after a brief spell at Seaham Park(?) in their Under 15's. Our wicky had signed up for the army so we need a replacement - turned out quite well in the end.

Calvin was 33 when moved to coast league so as good as he still was he would admit himself his best days were probably behind him. When in his pomp he played for one of the best sides in North East cricket at that time (Crook). This was before the introduction of the premier league so it's probably a little unfair to suggest he enjoyed being a big fish mind.
As for his mate ;) It was him who went to CLS for couple of years and also played about 3 seasons in senior league as well so I'm sure he'd take exception to that big fish comment as well. :)
In fairness he couldn't tie callys boot laces but he wouldn't tell him that!

Aye Crook had a really good side then remember watching them play Horden in several cup finals, Horden had a cracking side too, especially cup side.

Surprised when talking about past North East cricketers that nobody has mentioned Stuart Wilkinson think he played for Phili and Shotley Bridge(could be wrong)

He was a bit before my time late 70s early 80s , I was told he was one of the fastest amateur bowlers seen in North East local cricket.

I could hardly lay a bat on him in the nets..not great for your confidence going into the season.

He always said he was taking it easy on me as I was a canny slip/gully fielder and took a few catches off his bowling whenever I was drafted into the 1st team

Still bowls in the nets, still impossible to hit. Had this years overseas pro in all sorts of bother. Finished with just shy of 3000 first team wickets for Felling and about 25 runs.

So it's your fault I've been subjected to evenings round his palatial home getting old coast league handbooks pushed under my nose! He stopped collecting these around 2006 for some reason! ;)
In fairness he was a very good turn mind as much as it pains me to say it as I know he'll be having a sly peek!

Yeah wilkinson before my time too but heard all about him from lads who faced him. Rapid by all accounts.
I played with Sticks (Ian hunter) and mark turner who both been clocked at 90mph on sky in the past. Fair to say they were brisk mind!
