Good news. We havent been brilliant this season but couldnt have coped losing another experianced batsman considering Di Venuto, Smith, Blackwell & Benks have been peddled.

Hes also been our best 1day player by a country mile this year whilst Stonemans captaincy has looked dreadful.

Not entirely convinced this is good news ?
This means Lewis will be stopping on as coach and, it is well recorded, that we are not awash with money, another big paycheck going to Colly.
Not seen much of Onions this year and he will, no doubt, be well paid for next year as well. How much will we see of him next year ?
Durham are fast approaching the stage of a major rebuild. Senior players are at the end of their careers and the coaches, almost all of them, have been there a long time.
Suspect we will need an overhaul, in all areas, similar to what Yorkshire went through, rather than hanging on to past glories and memories.
We are still producing talented young cricketers but we need a new direction to progress.

It means stoneman isn't captain thats fantastic news.

To me Colly as a player appears no different to the player he was 15 years ago even though he is approaching 40. He is still an excellent one day cricketer especially his bowling (probably the best one day bowler Durham have had with Killeen). In championship cricket his batting is average and his bowling rarely required.
I'am quite happy he has signed up for another year but hope it is not at the expense of an overseas player. Hastings this season has shown how important a motivated overseas pro can be. Hopefully if he is not to return next season Durham can identify another Aussie state cricketer with a good record in their domestic cricket who is allowed to play county cricket.

With Borthwick and Hastings to follow suit? Borthwick's affinity to Durham is clear so it can only be money that's holding it up. Hastings whole-hearted commitment can't be questioned but what if he's again going to miss the 1st half of the season and possibly the end owing to IPL commitments?
We're stuck with Lewis I fear but can't see that he'll have much influence with Colly as captain. Mouthpiece in front of the media I suspect when required will be the extent of his involvement.
Bit of a worry though that both Wood and Harrison are tied to long term contracts given their fitness history.

Who better to act as a mentor for all of the talented young cricketers than the greatest ever Durham player?

haddaway man. what shite, it is clearly fantastic to hear colly is stopping on another year.

and to say all that when this time last year we were crowing about the fantastic crop of young cricketers coming in and impressing [harrison, arshad, wood etc] this year we have struggled badly with injuries but still played good cricket at times, loooked possible title challengers at times and brought through coughlin who very potentially could be another excellent young lad.

all we need is one lad to have been in nick with the bat this year and we would be fine, or if onions had been fit.

Yes if everyone is fit but they never are. Wood and Harrison can't play 4 or 5 games without breaking down. It's not bad luck-they're injury prone and Onions long term fitness is also a concern.
