Advocating a "city based" franchise T20, to replace our current format on twitter this morning.

You just know Durham would be re-branded Newcastle...

Starting to come around to the idea.

I genuinly dont think Durham would become Newcastle. Reckon it would stay the same.

Any IPL type franchise wouldn't involve 16 teams, that's far too many for the organisers to make money in England, there'd probably be only about 8-10 teams max. Our nearest franchise might end up being Leeds, as Headingley will be the only northern ground with floodlights.

Go Leeds Leopards! Or Lepers!

Don't think it'd take off in all honesty. T20's popularity
is dwindling as it is.

To me a City based tournament would only be aimed at people who don't like cricket or don't follow county cricket. It would alienate the proper fans IMO.

Could you imagine Middlesex and Surrey wanting to join together? Those two clubs probably do alright out of it as it is anyway. Both regularly have packed grounds etc.

If you have say a team in Manchester then Lancashire's Merseyside following won't be best pleased - likewise with us, you couldn't possibly call us Newcastle or Sunderland for fear of pissing off one or the other. Yorkshire is such a massive county it wouldn't do them much good to rally round one particular City. And so on.

Great player and unfairly scapegoated for the Ashes fiasco, but when did he become the font of all wisdom on T20?

I believe the whole "county" game should be re-branded and modelled on the Australian set up - a handful of "state" sides, with a higher level of "grade" (or league) cricket below - thus removing the trundling county circuit where genuinely fast bowlers shorten their run up and lower their speed in the search for accuracy and to avoid injury.

In a season where you may only play 11 games means every one of those games will actually have some some significance.

The level below would be where cricketers play their regular games when they can't get into the "state" team, are coming back after injury, seeking form etc.

This 19 County game, with T20 and Limited Over Cups is killing the game - case in point when you see trundlers like Darren Stevens taking 6-64. The fact that the game is refered to as "the circuit" suggests a degree of predictability and drudgery.

This just reeks of Pietersen looking for another Payday. Franchise t20 won't work in England we've been over this a hundred times.

Actually i'm not against this. When did we have a 19th County though?

Shit, thought Durham were the 19th? Didn't do me research did I?!?

Maybe I should blog this and send it to the foremost cricket writers in the land

Funnily enough, after we beat them in 2009 there was much hand wringing about the Shield system in Australia - too few teams meant too few young players playing first class cricket. They overhauled the second XI tournament so it was explicitly for under 23's but that meant the best young players were just playing other kids and struggled to make the step up.

There was nowt wrong with the county game when England were beating all and sundry 3-5 years ago.

It is no coincidence that we started to be successful as a nation with the introduction of central contracts, is it any wonder that we are plucking players from the circuit before they are ready for international cricket in order to stop them being worn down by the county game
