For the purpose of this thread, Panesar is the man to come in, I'd go;

Ballance/Root
Bell
Root/Ballance
Stokes
Prior
Jordan
Broad
Anderson
Panesar

Then you have 5 proper bowlers (Anderson, Broad, Jordan, Stokes and you're spinner in Panesar) with Root and Robson as your part timers with off spin and leg breaks.

Ballance doesn't convince me at all and against better attacks will struggle, he's another back foot player. Ali is much better coming forward which is definitely suited to these flat shit tips of pitches we are producing. Plus since any spinner we use cook will not bowl it will help to have another spinner in there who is better than a part timer like root.

But cos ballance got a meaningless ton he'll be kept in at 3.

Surely to god the selectors knew how these pitches would play. To see four seamers toiling fruitlessly (Jimmy aside) is embarrassing.

No doubt the after-match excuse will be how much we are missing Swann. Yet Tredwell or Monty could have offered more threat than Plunkett or Stokes on this wicket.

I've seen Ballance play some lovely shots on the front foot, he has in that in his locker but isn't showing it quite as often as he should be.

I'm still sceptical of Ballance at 3, I think Root is the future there and Ballance bats at 5 for Yorkshire so seems nonsensical to me switching them the way they are now.

I see root being able to bat number 3 against india,west indies, sri lanka,pakistan. But not against proper pacemen of australia,south africa and new zealand.

Ballance I see struggling in this series tbh.

As I keep saying, the entire team is picked on batting, to mask the ineptitude of Cook and the inexperience of the upper order. There's only Jimmy you would not consider an able batsman.
