Cattermole for England?

Cattermole might get a game for the Ivory Coast if he was Ivorian. He shouldn't and won't get a game for England.
Cattermole would have brought summit to the table last night if he had played. Certainly wouldn't have let the game pass him by like both Gerrard and Henderson.

I fully expect to be torn apart for saying this, but I think we needed someone like Huddlestone: keeping the ball and using it well was a bigger flaw right through the match.
Wouldn't be good for tackling and harrying but i agree we should have at least took him to the world cup, he wouldn't have been worse than Gerrard and probably more mobile.

I thought Ross Barkley would perform a similar role but even accounting for his limited time on the pitch, he's done fuck all.
He's an attacking midfielder.

as strange as this thread may sound it does raise an interesting issue.

if you compare England with USA, quite predictably USA will probably go further in this competition than England but it raises questions for me.

1) if Jozy Altidore was English, how far away from the England team would he be ? Answer.......bloody light years away from it

2) if Lee Cattermole was American, would he get into their team ? Answer.....maybe/ probably yes.

So how come we repeatedly struggle far more than teams with indisputably worse players than us ? it has to be something in our psychological characteristics.

Based on what? He gets slated constantly by his own fans playing at club level in the lower reaches of the premier league.

Why's he suddenly the answer to a must win world cup finals game?

Drive, the ability to actually tackle, someone who will harry the opposition, you need players like this in the team well we certainly do anyway and can't think of anyone better than Cattermole.

I'm a long-time Sunderland Season ticket holder and love Cattermole for Sunderland, however...Can you imagine the national outrage if he was called up? What about Jonjo Shelvey? What about Tom Cleverley? (Don't even rate him but he's got more a chance of getting a call-up than Catts) There's about 7/8 players at least who would be miles ahead of Cattermole, who averages a goal every 2/3 seasons and has limited Football ability.

Like someone has already suggested this is the exact same as the Mags wanting Steven Taylor playing for England - Not going to happen and incredibly biased.

Or they have players who can fit the team better even if they're not superstars for their club sides? Look at Medel, I know he's been rated highly but he wasn't great for a large amount of last season yet has been very good in his first two games.

It's a shame we'll probably never see Pirlo and Cattermole grace the same field.
If Catts was given a specific marking role on him, he wouldn't have had anywhere near the same effect that he did against us. Instead, we gave him the freedom of the City to pick us off at will.

Agree England need someone who can break up the play and get a tackle in like Catts does for us, but he is nowhere near good enough for England. He had a good run in at the end of the season as did the rest of the team but let's not get carried away, he's an average player who lacks the skill and temperament to play at a high level.

In all seriousness do you think we'd have done better last night with him in midfield? We lacked any bite in the team, a midfield with no-one who can tackle, he also has the drive we needed as well, they had a 32 year old who looking at his wiki hasn't played for a decent European club so surely wouldn't be outclassed. Cattermole also steps up his game and is made for the big games against the better teams, only problem would be the lack of quality around him who can create chances.

But if we put Cattermole in the media would have went mental, Hodgson would have took stick off fans as well and his job would already be being questioned before the tournament began, obviously he wouldn't have even considered Cattermole anyway but that's a problem for us as well, the media jumping on every decision from the manager because we're Ingerland and should win everything because we invented the game and that.
Definatly could've done with someone like Catts if he starts the season like he ended it you never know.
If he kicks on we could do worse in midfield.

Yeah I put it in the OP that if he was called up the media would go mad and Hodgson would get loads of stick, I'd put Cattermole above on the fact we need someone with bite in midfield, not because he's 'better' than the other options.

IMO he's a big game player and would have thrived in midfield last night. That's just my opinion though.

Cattermole is not the answer to any of our national teams problems.

His first touch is quite simply not good enough at International level. Uruguay were pressing us with real urgency, 60 yards out with 2 men two every ball. Cattermole would have have been completely exposed and would've crumbled much like Villa at home this season unfortunately.

when you consider Medel had to adapt to premier league football most would say that he had a decent first season i think.

If Catts was given a specific marking role on Pirlo he'd probably have been sent off.

I think most of the objections to this suggestion is based on the bizarre notion that the World Cup and international football in general is for 'world class' players, and that Cattermole doesn't fit that bill. And while he obviously doesn't, it's far more important to have effective players and effective strategies than a team of strictly the 11 'best' players in the country. Ultimately, for better or for worse, Cattermole (or a player like him, no bias here I assure you ) could have done a far better job for England yesterday than Gerrard did.

England could certainly do a lot worse.

The one thing they lacked last night was someone who could press and harry Uruguay's players. Gerrard and Henderson playing as deep as they were was truly insipid.

Which, ironically, is something that Henderson excels at for Liverpool.
