Shorts balls have done for a couple today. Hopefully Jimmy can stick around so Root gets his double hundred.
 
Root has to be given no more than 4 overs to get it.

Can anyone explain why we have that rule anyway?

I've never understood it, if it's hitting the stumps it should be out.

Sorry which rule? The LBW? If so, the ball has to pitch in-between the stumps, if it pitches outside the line of the stumps then it isn't a straight ball. Does that help? I'm not sure if there's actually a full explanation as to the why's and wherefore's ...

I'm fully aware of what is an LBW. Your second point is more what im on about. Never understood the reasoning of why if it pitches outside leg stump/ or if outside the line off stump whislt playing a shot you can't be out.

If it's hitting the stumps it's techincally Leg before wicket.
