Hope this doesn't sound to negative but have to say I've been watching the young fella play for ECC @ Washy today... I love what Washington are trying to do but they need to do something with the facilities...
Probably no more than 6 benches in the whole ground and none on two sides??? The ones that are there look like they've been donated from a car boot??? The whole outfield has not been cut for a week by the look (I know the weather has been poor but please get the grass cut) I had to walk 20 meters on to the pitch to see the score.. Big respect to the club for what they want for the future but it's not all about the firsts!!!

I'm not sure if the fact that the ground is owned by Sunderland City Council impinges on what they can and cant do.

We are currently bidding against the Council to get full ownership of the ground, the problem is, is that we have 2 massive iron containers full of equipment located to the back of the car park that we arent allowed to use as its the councils gear and we aren't insured.

There's heavy rollers, a ground buggy, scarifiers and all sorts but its all pointless for the time being.

The groundsmen are absolutely embarrasing and lazy as fuck, They cut a wicket on Thursday and mark it out then thats all the work they do on it until the following week. I was down mopping up the ground last week and witnessed the groundsman go to whitewash the boundary marker and push his little spray machine up to a flag that had been left in the ground, and instead of taking the flag out, he then navigated around it leaving a blank spot on the boundary, They also done the same for the screens at both ends of the fields.

We really need ownership of the ground before we can make any significant changes in appearance to the ground although it did looking cracking for the Twenty20 tonight as it had been freshly cut and had a decent strip cut also.

Our ground (Houghton) is also council run, and we have the same problems. Although the strip is usually decent to be fair, when the normal groundsman is on holiday and the council send a young lad to do it it's shocking. The grass is cut when wet leaving bundles of stray grass on the outfield, and last year the young lad marked out the crease with a footy line machine! The lines where about 5inches wide!

All the council are really worried about is getting there money, do very little to help clubs improve.

It has always been the case when councils maintain cricket grounds.

The problem is that this will thwart the efforts of any ambitious club. You can only ever teach bairns to bat properly and bowl accurately on good quality wickets.

Some effort that.

I note that the lad has played 142 games in the last 3 seasons (clearly with more to come). Thats a mammoth amount of cricket for a young lad:

I should also have said, regarding the development system, that my lad at 12 years of age is the youngest player in the Hetton Lyons Sunday League setup. For those clubs that use the system correctly ie for young lads to get their first taste of playing against senior cricketers it is a huge bonus. One of my lads team mates is 13, he is a county player. He scored 133 for the Academy team 3 weeks ago. Great to watch.
