Now that the domestic season is upon us, and whilst there are a good 10 weeks until the test cricket returns who would you pick for the 1st test? Apparently Cook admitted there are up to 7 places available as it stands (assuming the four untouchables are Cook, Bell, Broad and Anderson)

I'd go for:

Cook (c)
Robson
Root
Bell
Taylor
Stokes
Prior (w)
Borthwick
Broad
Overton
Anderson

Smattering of experience, plenty of raw talent. Think Ballance and Mills worth a call up at some point too

No consideration for Trott?? Was dismissed for 4 from 19 balls today in a friendly against Gloucestershire.

I wouldn't pick him like.

Not far off what I would pick I think Root and Borthwick will be enough of a spin option in England unless another spinner is knocking down the door at the start of the season. If Butler scores runs in CC wk position can be his Prior has looked finished since NZ. I hope it's a bowl off between the young quicks at the start of the season for who gets the place. Plenty of names in the hat Overton, Finn, Mills, Jordan, Wood.

Not convinced by Buttler as WK - he, like Prior was, is a batsmen who keeps wicket. I think he needs to improve his keeping dramatically before he can be considered for test duty. Think Prior will come good.

I'm not convinced on Borthwick. I think at number 8 he has to offer more with the ball than he does. Maybe if he starts the season well with the ball, although that is unlikely given conditions. He could however be a decent replacement for Stokes at 6 if he is injured, and conditions dictate that we would like to play 4 out and out seamers.

Also think you have to play Ballance.

I would like something along the lines of

Cook
Ali
Root
Bell
Ballance
Borthwick (if Stokes not fit)
Buttler
Jordan
Broad
Onions
Anderson

I really like the look of Jordan and that gives you 2 bang it in types, and a couple who rely on swing a little more.

If they want to play an out and out spinner I think it has to be Monty, and I would probably swap him out for Onions. Stokes at 6 would help in that scenario too.

You might be right about Buttler I just think that Prior has looked like he's going to get out straight away whenever he goes in. Who's next in line Bairstow/Foakes?

This is the team they will pick & NOT the team I would pick

Cook
Root
Trott
Bell
Ballance
Stokes/Taylor
Prior
Bresnan
Broad
Anderson
Panesar

I think if fit they should go with

Cook
Ali (deserves a chance as has looked good)
Bell
Taylor
Ballance
Stokes
Prior
Borthwick
Broad
Onions
Anderson

They will pick Root tho if he is fit, they shouldn't as he needs county runs first for me. Seems to be the blue eyed boy but has a lot to prove.

Cook
Root
Bell
Taylor
Ballance
Buttler
Stokes
Jordan
Broad
Anderson
Onions

We don't have any spinners who are anywhere near good enough for this level, so fuck it, five seamers and Root if needs be. Would possibly have a younger lad in instead of Onions, but I've never really seen any of the candidates play so he'll do for now.

I've been trying to pick my England Test eleven since Perth and to be honest I'm still none the wiser. It changes daily but if I had to pick it NOW. With the current availability (although assuming Stokes is fit), I'd go -

Cook
Robson
Taylor
Bell
Ballance
Stokes
Prior
Borthwick
Broad
Onions
Anderson

With possibly Jordan as the back-up quick. I feel with the spinner, you could perhaps bed someone in this summer and play predominantly on seaming pitches at home. We've got no Tour this winter and the WIndies away next March so for me I don't think the spinner is a MASSIVE issue until India in Winter 2015.

Still baffled as to why Steven Davies never gets a mention these days, he's a much better all-round batsman and keeper than the likes of Buttler and Kieswetter.

Bigotry??

On a serious not I have always seen him go well with the bat. Not massively up to date on his keeping skills but can't be any worse than Prior/Buttler/Kieswetter

He has a good record in the championship and always bats within the top 5, whenever I've seen him in limited overs games for Surrey he always seems to impress aswell, can score all around the wicket and his keeping skills look decent enough to me.

He had a go in the 1 dayers didnt he. I seem to remember he did ok too. Have seen much worse play for England over the years. I always thought Mustard was discarded too early, particularly from the T20 although Buttler has that slot nailed down now.
