Onions won't even be considered. The selectors made their stance quite clear. Tremlett was the man in possession. Stokes was the outside bet and won't be dropped. When Bresnan was fit and if things weren't going to plan, he'd be the one to come in leaving Finn and Rankin to battle it out, they're as yet untested in the series. Onions is bowling bang average in South Africa and won't be considered until all the original selections have failed more than once.

Some things I agree with but not others. Onions getting plenty of overs and bowling well in SA could well have been selected ahead of bowlers that hadn't played on tour. That is according to an interview by Jimmy Anderson who may or may not be in the know. Problem is Onions hasn't played that much cricket and hasn't bowled well - I have to admit I don't think GO would have made much difference in Aus bowling 82mph with a short window for the new ball.

I think Onions is the obvious selection. The big lads have clearly been hopeless and GO is just a phone call away.
Wtf - He's not even in the same continent, the series is over - the selectors & management arent gonna admit they are wrong now & call him up for the remaining tests of an ashes series they cant even win anyway.[DOUBLEPOST=1387140196][/DOUBLEPOST]

Why do you think differently? The ball has barely moved off the straight for any bowler in 3 tests. There has only been about 3 LBW's out of 50 or so dismissals because of bounce which is a big mode of dismissal for GO. In NZ on flat pitches last winter he got caned at 5 an over in the warm up games. The kookaburra ball has a tiny new ball window and GO in South Africa on similar pitches has barely taken a wicket and been expensive in the process. Also when you throw in the fact that our batsmen haven't helped our bowlers by not getting competitive scores.

Don't get me wrong - he should be it there, he earned his place but rather than answer with WTF and smilies if you would like to explain how he would have made a significant difference I would like to hear it.

The Wtf was for your original ridiculous statement, then you contradicting yourself a few posts later? You been on the sauce lad?

We don't have a set of bowlers available for selection for England that are anywhere near a match for theirs on their pitches at the moment. Not Jimmy, not Broad, not Onions. We don't have anyone quick enough with enough control. They are though the best we have though and all should be out there.

So yes I do think Onions should be in Australia but I don't think he would have made a world of difference. Nowt contradictory there mate.

I'm not sure that care after last night's shambles

If Prior fails again in the 2nd innings he must be dropped for Bairstow. If Broad doesn't make it we'll have to play Finn as Tremlett has the same pace as Collingwood or Trott.

i'd definitly agree with this, he is more than good enough to be one of the top bowlers and as such should have a place in the 17 man squad but i'm not sure i would have picked him for any test matches. first time up it was tremlett and thats fair enough, we expect fst bouncy pitches so picking the extra bowler to be one of tremlett or finn was probably the right call.

that backfired as everyone has lost pace. we went with two spinners, can't imagine him getting picked over broad or anderson.

then bresnan was back fit and given his performances for england recently with bat and ball and expecially considering our terrible batting bresnan was the right choice.

perhaps the next match if broad doesn't make it i would give him a go, if he was there. obviously a finn or tremlett is a more like for like replacement but considering everyone's pace is down i would go for onions... however as pointed out to fly him over to australia for a series that will already be lost by then barring a miracle is a bit much. and thats IF broad is injured for the next game.[DOUBLEPOST=1387146429][/DOUBLEPOST]

was talknig to my marra about this yesterday, would bairstow have been doing that much glove work over the last few years? i don't see it. he wont have played much for his county for a while and played as a batsman for england so will have been desperate to improve his batting to get a shot in the team.

as we saw yesterday wicketkeeper fuck ups can make or break a team, and more than just losing the match it will do bairstow's confidence no good at all to be coming in behind the stumps in a thrashing if he starts f***ing things up

The more I think about this, the more I have no idea.

Is it a team to win in Melbourne or a team to beat India in the summer? Let's look at the contenders

Cook - will come good, not sure he is a captain
Carberry - not sure he has done a lot wrong to be honest, clearly not one for the future. Worth sticking with for me.
Root - is it just me or does he look out of his depth at times? If he hadn't got that score at Lords he would have offered nowt all summer, and has one score this series. Clearly has something, but doesn't fill me with confidence.
Bell - pure class
KP - has to stay for me, he is hot and cold but we look weaker without him
Ballance - not seen enough, can't throw him in surely?
Taylor - not fancied. Looks solid but plays too much to leg. Will get found out?
Stokes - never a 6 yet. But has something and needs persevering with
Compton - a backward step. Looked scared to play a shot.
Prior - on thin ice. Been a great servant but....time for a change?
Bairstow - don't see him as a test keeper or a test batsman. Sorry.
Swann - sigh....looking old
Broad - him and Bella are first names on team sheet. I was wrong about him
Jimmy - still class, with little to replace him, he has to play
Bresnan - not good enough with ball. Papers over batting cracks and works well when other bowlers are firing.
Finn - by all accounts he is too wayward. Could get a carting
Rankin - weird selection
Tremlett - even weirder
Onions - I'm sure he would have got a pasting at his pace. This tour will actually help his reputation. Will play in the summer

In summary. We are screwed

I would imagine Bairstow has been groomed to be a keeper by his Dad since childhood and he is on the tour as WK cover so he'll have been practising regularly. Keepers have been played as batsmen only at test level (Sangakkara, McCullum etc.) but then don the gloves for ODI's no bother. I seriously can't think he could be much worse than Prior at present. He did make a 50 but he had a few let offs during his only decent knock of the tour.
