1970s Blues/Guitar Rock - Friday gig

I was being a bit greedy, wanted Andy Fraser to play Mr. Big twice by also joining Freeway for an encore!

Well...were you there?
What a great night...what a gig!
When Andy Fraser played Mr Big it was a privilege to see and hear it. He gave us a real eclectic mix of rock, jazz and blues with young Tobi Earnshaw to the fore.
But for me the night really took off when Andy joined "support" act Freeway on stage for part of their excellent set, laying down that throbbing bass for Be My Friend, Songs of Yesterday and a terrific rendition of Fire and Water. Wonderful.
But for those of you on this thread who have (quite understandably) called for a dream "Free" collaboration involving Paul Rodgers, Andy, Simon Kirke and Joe Bonamassa, I hope you understand now why I'd substitute the reLatively unknown John Buckton from Freeway as the guitarist.
He was brilliant last night...and playing Koss's very own guitar to boot. Talk about a
throwback.
Great turnout. Wonderful night.

What an incredible guitarist. Very, very impressed with him last night.
Great to see Andy Fraser up there too and loved Be My Friend. Worth it just for that moment.
Thought I`d won the bass too on the second draw but I was a couple out....drat !!

Forgot all about the raffle, still got a boatload of tickets in my jeans:roll:

Tremendous evening, overdid the Guinness a bit but the sea air has cleared things up this morning. Thought the seating was going to spoil things but it worked out alright as people were sitting quietly while Malcolm Bruce was on (and his daughter is a definite wad) but things quickly got more relaxed as the night went on. There WERE quite a few sitting on the floor while Andy Fraser's band was on! That Tobi is some talent, mind, as well as being very young and not exactly ugly. I asked Chris Spedding to tell me he was a cunt but he said he was a really nice lad.

Good to meet George K and The Hunter - I swear there was a tear in his eye when Freeway launched into his theme tune.

Can't claim the credit, a mate of mine emailed me the link. Hopefully more might come from the gadgeys at the sound mixing desk as there was a lot of videoing going on there.

Took some pics but only with phone (left bloody camera at home) so these are the best ones.

Had something in my eye for a few of the songs played.

Seem to remember having this problem during Be my Friend, Walk in my Shadow, Fire and Water, The Hunter and especially Ride on Pony and Mr Big.

Splendid performance of Moonshine - you forget how beautiful some songs are.

I was fortunate to congratulate John Buckton after the gig on his excellent performance.

One song I wish that had have been played was Heartbreaker but otherwise no complaints at all.

Also I wish I'd have met up with some of the board members.

Great to see this reaction...it was a great night. Apologies for being silent most of today...serious (fatal?) problem with my smartphone. Just got back to Kent and on to the tablet...I thought Fraser came across really well, not just his performance both with his own band and Freeway but his demeanour and approachability...just seemed a smashing bloke.
In the front hotel bar later, John Buckton was buzzing after sharing the stage with one of his heroes. Must give credit too to Bob Davidson who, I thought, was on very good form on lead vocals.
As for Moonshine, Buckton absolutely nailed that solo ...what a brilliant bit of playing that was.
Pickle it in aspic!

What Bill is trying to say is that he sat on his smartphone and smashed the screen :)
And he was still wearing the white boots yesterday!

Glad everybody had a great night!!

Whilst I respect your opinion, and Johns playing and I understand what you're saying, a band featuring Kirke, Rodgers, Fraser and an intrrnationally acclaimed guitarist with a back catalogue (such as - my favourite - Bonamassa or Neil Schon, Steve Lukather, whoever) would be a band that could perform old - and even new material - and would be creditable, respectable an exciting project. Three quarters of Free aged 60 ish playing with an impersonator (however good) - and i mean no disrespect - who looks and sounds like one of their friends from 1971 would, in my opinion, be a very weird thing. Three of them would feel that they were in some strange tribute band hybrid I'm sure. And it'll never happen anyway. Neither will the Bonamassa thing.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

I don't think the Bonamassa thing can be completely written off - although a one off would seem to be more likely than a large tour. Would certainly prefer him to the other two that you mentioned.

New material is perhaps asking too much, certainly in terms of a full CD.

If they get together, I do think that a 'name' guitarist' would be required but Rodgers has often had two guitarists with him so John could have a place. He certainly has the ability.

No problem George...respect your opinion too, mate. I really like Joe, got a lot of his stuff and it's cool that he cites Free as a big influence. Technically, too, he is mustard.
My point is simply the "feel", tone and emotion in Koss's playing has never been matched. It's hypothetical but if you wanted anything like that in a future Free project, the the most authentic option would be Buckton.
By the way, he's not that much younger than Rodgers and Co. PR is what, 63 now, Kirke is a similar age and Andy is 61.... Buckton is 52.

An incredible guitarist and one that most guitarists admire. He`s played on more albums than you`d ever realise.

It's been great following this and the Andy Fraser thread. Forty plus years on and Free, Rodgers, Fraser, Kirke and Kossoff STILL huge in the Sunderland area........

Met about a half a dozen of me old pals on Friday night who were all at the Locarno for Free Live gig, and an earlier gig at the Locarno. Just a bit too young for the Bay gig.

Good on you TL ...it was some night. Let's hope we get the chance to see something similar again before too long. Sunderland, first, and the Newcastle were Free strongholds long before they made it big nationwide. Our band!
I remember painting the Free logo on the flap of my haversack - as was the fashion - back in 1970. Wish I had kept it!

Saw them at the Rink and the Empire too...

So did I , and also the City Hall. Rink with Deep Purple.

Re. The Hunter's haversack flap being painted....brilliant. Nearly all our class at South Shields Grammar had the same thing. One lad had a nice little 'business' going albeit it he painted them for nowt! Had forgotten about painted haversacks!

Remember a shop that was closing in King St. South Shields and had a big card board poster which contained the word FREE on in in about 8 foot .......me and me mate asked the women in the shop for the poster , when we explained why , she thought we were crackers. The FREE part of the poster in orange and b
Ack went on me bedroom wall, though.

End of this should read:- the Free part of the poster in orange and black went on me bedroom wall, though.

A final little anecdote from me...

The Gig Free played at the Locarno a few months before the Free Live gig, got me Tons of Sobs signed and also met the lads backstage. Asked Kossoff for a strum of his Les Paul ( the gold one he used to play).....no problem. Rodgers was surrounded by beautiful women , Fraser and Kirke were setting up.

A few years later swapped me well worn autographed Tons of Sobs for Shhhh by Tens Years After. What an idiot I was!
