If KP misses Old Trafford who should replace him?

I agree it should be Compton but I think Taylor may get the nod. He was unfortunate not to get a longer run when he first broke into the team.

Compton was pushed aside as a result of Yorkies (Vaughan, SGB) lobbying hard to get both Root and Bairstow in the team. Compton should come in if KP is not fit and Root should drop back down the order.

1) a conspiracy? Really?
2) they made a call that Root will open, after 180 at Lords they will not change that
3) Compton down the order is possible, Taylor is more likely

I don't think they will want to mess Root about and I don't think they will. I also don't think they'll want Compton in the middle order as he's too much of a blocker, they'll want a stroke maker in there. Think Compton will only be thought of as an opener now. I think he's been harshly dealt with but I think the likes of Root, Bairstow and Taylor will offer England more for a lot longer.

Don't really see how Compton has been harshly dealt with when he's an average player and never looked convincing at this level.

We can afford to give someone younger a go seeing as we're 2-0 up and absolutely crushing this sorry excuse for an Australian lineup. Taylor seems the obvious pick.

:shock::shock:

Are you on glue?

This. Build for the future, not the immediate present. COmpton is first reserve if Root or Cook get injured - he's the new Carberry. Taylor is the future.

That said, I reckon (and despite receiving more medical attention than the Duchess) his famous calf will be fine come OT

You could make a case for Compton at 3 (where he plays for Somerset) and push everyone down a place - that said, Trott has been our best No.3 in a long time, so senseless to mess with the batting order.

I still have concerns over Bairstow and his technique......it's the only thing he and I have in common - the propensity to miss too many straight balls!

Compton was given a chance to establish himself despite the fact that his County record is average at best (and absolute garbage away from the batting paradise of Taunton), and didn't take it. Got the chance ahead of others because of his name.

Pushing Root down the order is the move of a drug addict.

Taylor is the man they have earmarked for the middle order next, so he gets his chance. I suspect it would be Morgan if he was fit.

Probably a blessing in disguise he isn't in that case. Never a test match cricketer that lad.

How has Compton failed to take his chance any more than Taylor?

Compton was one of the real positives from the tour of New Zealand. Had a few dodgy innings in the return series and the Yorkshire mafia are on his back.

Taylor hardly set the world alight in his tests against SA and he was part of some poor batting performances by the Lions against Bangladesh. Yet he's young and has been groomed for the job, so gets cut a bit of slack.

If there is a political reason why Compton gets the nod, it will not be because of his name, but to show county players can play themselves into England contention imho.

No way will they bring Compton back to open and push Root back down, absolutely zero chance of that and rightly so. Wether it was harsh or not to drop Compton, the fact remains that it happened, barring injures Root & Cook will be the opening partnership now until Cook retires.

If he is fit they will pick Bopara to replace Pietersen, although personally I think it's all bollocks, Pietersen will be fit for OT.

Two good knocks (On utterly flat tracks that produced two dull draws, but that's being trite) in New Zealand and nothing before or since. An utterly uninspiring County career where he couldn't even get into the Middlesex side and has only really scored runs at Somerset. Add the fact that he's turned 30 and there's the reasons - he is a never was.

You say Taylor has been groomed for England? There can't be a batter in the Country whose been pushed harder than Compton (perhaps Bell in his early days), mostly because of the name.

Taylor has had three innings against the best attack in the world, and was run out in one of them. He pretty much hasn't had a go yet. That's why.

Yes, Taylor is young and hasn't made any kind of step up yet. But he's scored buckets of runs and is the man they see taking over in the middle order in a couple of years, that's why he has to play in there's an injury.

And one other thing. Yorkshire mafia? Have a word man.

Poor weather caused those draws, they were keenly contested.

Their top run scorer in 2006 and 2009.

I am not sure whether this is a compliment or a criticism.

Poor for the Lions in Bangladesh though.

As I said, groomed.

I think I would rather put the series beyond the Aussies before trying someone like Taylor.

And one other thing. Yorkshire mafia? Have a word man.

You know exactly who I mean. I doubt they would have been so vitriolic in their pursuit of the lad if he hadn't stood in the way of a Yorkshireman (and fellow alumnus in Vaughan's case).

All opinions innit.

The main problem is how you accommodate Compton and Root in the same team. One or other, or Cook, would need to drop down the order.
