Really don't want to scaremonger but I wonder if our wage bill is a bit of a short term issue. This report combined with the N'Diaye deal could well be an indication that our failure to shift on highly paid, unwanted players is hampering us at this moment. Also worth noting that our squad is actually pretty bloated. Perhaps the club are erring on the side of caution with both these issues. The last thing we want is to be caught on the wrong side of the line on wages or numbers.

Do hope your reading is right, mind. Would hate to see talent slip through our fingers because of David Vaughan and the like.

I can't really see a 19 years old Greek prospect's wages being that prohibitive.

We desperately need to clear out older high earners like Gardner, Vaughan and Bardo.
Young players like Jimmy Mac, Ji, Alf, Wickham probably won't be on huge sums and if PDC likes them at all can be good back up for the first team.
JoS and Brown are huge earners but good enough for the first team if fit and we have no option.

N'Diaye is on a canny wedge.

I'd imagine McLean (new contract), wickham (signed for £8m) and N'diaye are all on good money.

Sunderland may already have tied up a whole host of deals and been linked with hundreds of players - “ninety per cent of rumours are absolute rubbish”, De Fanti says – but signing on the dotted line is the result of months of hard work before negotiations even begin.

Let's just wait and see

On their own I'm sure they aren't. However while we are still carrying £70k p/w on Catts and Bardsley alone plus an assortment of others, the club may well be best advised to say no more for now - particularly with more pressing needs at fullback. Add in the fact that we currently have 24 pros in the first team squad and you can see why they might not want it to get away from them.

Do you reckon we could sell Catts without him proving his fitness?

Probably not unless they were hoping that Brucey would have a nibble. Its a worry that we haven't been able to give Bardsley away as yet. How hard will it be for players we want a fee for? We're three players away from a well balanced squad. It would be immensely frustrating if Bruceys summer came back to haunt us once again.

Thing is the people at the club must have recognised there's a good chance we'll be stuck with him if he's sat around doing nothing and this will have been factored in to any planning around wages. For this reason alone I doubt it would be instrumental in stalling a deal with a 19 year old. My money would still be on him signing. Maybe only a pound mind.

That is clearly going to be an issue at some point. We can't keep carrying massive wages on players that aren't wanted and bringing new players in.

People seem to forgot that we have already shipped out Titus, Kilgallon, Mig, Elmo, and now Graham - have returned Danny Rose and are likely to get rid of Bardsley plus what could be up to six others - so while we have added and still add we are trimming also

Aye. Just depends on how much they want to gamble. We have more pressing positions than winger for the squad. If we're going to run with too many players and risk going over the wage limits I'd expect them to prioritise fullbacks first. TBH its more taking this report with the Alf stuff. If we're willing to gamble on being able to shift players before Sept 2nd, you'd imagine that we'd hold on to Alf. He's in the starting XI for Fulham as it stands.

The stuff that Andy is digging up from the Greek press is encouraging, though.
