Tin hat on, but a bit irresponsible of the judge imo. Sure, it's fine if you're a fit 25 year old and the mugger's a knuckle-dragger, but a different mugger could have fought back and really hurt him - or worse.
Anyone reading that might be tempted to do the same if held up themselves - and might not be so lucky.

I felt the judge kind of hinted at that when he said it's a good thing the "victim" was a big strong lad. In other words, the law is saying the only thing you need to worry about is your own safety, you don't have to worry about the legal ramifications of giving a clip to someone who's trying to commit a violent crime against you. Which is fair and needed to be said.
Is 'beat up' the right term?
Nah, 'fought off' I'd say. He should have beaten him up to be fair like.
